  • Hello guys,

I'm new here and from France :)
Can somebody write down the lyrics of "Drew" please?
I have to admit that I don't get everything...

I looove the video. It's just amazing how Alison and Will still manage to create a entire new atmosphere for each album :x

    Thanks :)

    Pull up the blinds
    Open the door wide
    Feel the cold arrive
    In my bones

    Put on my face
    The way I dressed today
    Feel like you tonight
    On my day

    Falling little more
You bumped and crashed in dirty snow
Up to our sin, I might as well
    Melt into Sunday

    Remember the time
We stood there by the lake
    Watching boats and waves
    Pretty white clouds

    The sun will sweat
    In fact the song begins
    Trees are your skin
    On my tongue

    Falling little more
You bumped and crashed in dirty snow
Up to our sin, I might as well
    Melt into Sunday

    Pull up the blinds
    Open the door wide
    Feel the cold arrive
    In my bones

    You, me and more
We bumped and crashed in dirty snow
Up to our sin, we might as well
    Melt into Sunday

    La la la la la
La la la la la la la la la
We know you’re, you’re not how it seems
    Don’t have a point

You’re not there for the stay
When I will wish you could
    Wish that you were there

    You could
    You’re dying in here
    You could be here soon
    You stumble on a river

  • At close to midnight after a very long day I got to hear it.....

Gorgeous..... Unexpected but yes, it is, to my mind, a return to Felt Mountain..., very cinematic.

Tomorrow daytime its going on a loop in my house.....
  • I played drew to someone very special to me last night, someone I have shared many a goldfrapp adventure with. its a mutual appreciation thing. I wish that something could heal the past and we could share our adventures again. the tears are real as drew plays over in my head . remember the time...

  • Sounds likely - monday is the day she previews new releases.

But there's nothing on the BBC 6 Music site yet
  • I'm going to be having to get it off of the internet, which looks feasible...

    Great find, Ping!

i reckoned as she tagged lauren lavern and alison in the tweet it was fairly reliable. god i hope so!  [-O<
  • Not surprised in the slightest by the fact that BBC 6 Music got the exclusive and that it is the Lovely Laverne. The perfect home for the album's style and the people most likely to give it a listen!

    Very well spotted, Ping!

  • Really its a win win situation because whichever song it is will be the one that we all look forward to the most at the shows...
  • I'm fairly certain it'll be Annabel.

  • I'm getting very excited about the Frapptastic week to come. Single info and airplay on Monday, preview of TOU midweek. I'm just trying to remain calm but really am jumping out of my skin.
  • I'm thinking the first single will be "Drew" since that's the first video they shot months ago.  The video for "Annabel" was shot late May/early June, so I feel that will be the second single.  Either way, I'm excited for new music!

  • Ok so if her show is 10-1 GMT, that means it's 6-9 here. Great I won't even be fucking awake.
  • Am I right in thinking the show starts in about an hour and will go for about 3 hours? (I'm in Australia and want to listen online)
  • I'm confused. Apparently the time in london is just gone 8, which means it would be 2 hours from now, since it starts at 10, but I'm not sure? Anyone in the UK where bbc6 is broadcast on local time?
  • Great! I'm really looking forward to it :)
  • I really hope that this is true... I'll be working and won't be able to listen to the full show, but still, if it confirms I'm sure there will be a way to listen to it again :)

If I were dead, could I do this?
  • AHHHH I LOVE IT! I'm sat out in the garden sunning myself with this on loop in the background for the rest of the day.  It couldn't be more perfect.

  • the lyrics are so good and fit the arrangement so well, so many memories of love gone by. I think I've got them all down on the fifth or sixth listen!

They certainly know exactly how to prick my recollections, I had not expected to feel like this about it. I think that has surprised me more than anything else.

That's interesting, Cervus, the point about memories.  Even without understanding the lyrics (the first few times!!), there's a sense of reminiscence, like autumn..
  • Woohooo!  It's on Laverne.

  • @tweety. Yes they do, I am just surprised that it had quite the reaction that it did as the song did not exist at any of the points it is referencing. It is transporting me straight there having hit my emotions full on and now it already feels like it was there somewhere all along.

    Babbling now :)

Wow That's a bit far away.
Forgive me, Goldfrapp, but in the meantime I may need to come into possession of this song through... other means.

  • September 2nd? That's.....dumb. Unless there's a b-side present next to no ones going to buy a single for an album out a week later, especially when they've been hearing it for a month and a half beforehand.
  • All I heard was that the album is out Sept 9....
  • ^ Lauren said drew is released on sept 2nd.

Yeah @rewak the release dates do seem a bit odd.
  • ^Maybe my ears have gone mental.

It would be odd to preview a "new single" 6 weeks before its released.....

    Did anyone else hear this?

I thought I heard it too.
    I hope she's wrong though...

But wasn't Rocket meant to be released a week before Head First, before the massive leak?

  • Yeah, Ping confirmed.  Sure is weird.

  • Therre are one or two moments in the strings that made me think of early Scott Walker, during the Scott 1-3 period? A little breath of Wally/Angela magic.?

When we got a feel for the fact there might be big strings involved I did wonder/hope this migfht be the case, knowing how much of a fan Alison is. So pleased it might be panning out that way.

Nope, still the trailer for me.

maybe it'll just take a while to update. Whenever the trailer was uploaded, I still saw the old portal site for about an hour before it changed.

  • I could not get the video to show/play on Internet Explorer at all. It did work on Firefox however.

    It is frigging glorious!

You can download the video at full 1920x1080 from the youtube page.

  • The websites a mess, i've said that since it opened, HTML5 is a pile of crap mister web designers! You aren't supposed to play with crap, drop it, wash your hands and start doing something sensible!

Depending what browser you have it might be worth trying the equivalent "Reload Web Page" option.
    It's CTRL+F5 on some browsers.

Alternatively, it might be the DNS tables (ie the way the internet routes from what you type to the destination) still resolving if they are switching between a WIP server for the site and a live one when changes are made.

    Hope one of those helps!

Otherwise, go to the goldfrapp site (little things) or twitter and find the note that says, "“#Drew is here. Enjoy. http://t.co/UNRuMWfDCP” and hit the link.

I'm just guessing because that link is taking forever to download...but, I'm pretty sure that's it...

The only reason I'm responding is that I understand how much it could be drivng you crazy, as it is me waiting for the darned thing to load.

  • If the site isn`t updating (I mean the site goes to the old video - not waiting like Rewaks and HJs points above and below) , its not the sites fault or the designers , its probably that your ISP is caching pages instead of refetching them - only when your ISP allows the cache to update will your page update when you visit it .

  • Can I just repeat, for anyone waiting for the video to load - on the Goldfrapp website... if you are using Internet Explorer (IE 10 in my case)... I waited a long time and it never appeared. (No amount of refreshing helped.) Whereas with Firefox (ver 20), it loaded/played within seconds.

This may be due to HTML5 incompatibilities with IE, as rewak mentioned.

The video for me well, not sure what sort of a message thats giving out but not to my liking at all. I just dont get what the necessity of being arty has to include nakedness! It doesn't tell me anything just cheapens it. Hey ho maybe it's just the way I've been brought up.
Overall initial thoughts is I'm not blown away but disappointed. I'll probably change my thoughts by Thursday but going to take a LOT of convincing

  • So good.
  • 4/5 listens get's the thumbs up from me, I like, love in fact the darker image, exactly the opposite to the  last offering (whic I also like/love). Nicely arranged, epic sound, it might be compared to as a bit 7T/FM but it sounds different to these ears at any rate, a new era for Goldfrapp again and I love it....

were you not that taken with 7T either?

i think the thing with nudes is they represent an unfettered image, for me i see a memory, one thats unspoiled by the drudgery of every day life or reality. a moment in time thats remembered as one of those 'perfect' moments. i think the songs quite sensuous and for me the video fits that well. but hey... we all take different things from what we see and hear.

My interpretation is they're naked because they're either dead, imaginary, or just memories, which is why the keep appearing and disappearing in the video. When Alison walks into the room at the end of the video and see's herself standing at the window with the people in bed then begins to shed her clothes that's a sign that either she's died or she's entered her imaginary world again (either a fantasy world, a memory she wants to change, or some kind of split personality going on). But that's just my opinion.

That's along the lines I thought too, that she was shedding her clothes to give in to her yearning for her memories which, in effect, is what the figures are/were?

  • I love the video because it does a good job of removing all of the inhibitions that people have about sex.
  • Please, can somebody write down the lyrics? That would be great! Thank you all!!!

  • Okay, this is probably a "Duh!" moment for me but, HJ, you can download from Youtube??!?!  Everything??  I don't see a button anywhere.
  • I'm rationing myself (always better not to hear singles too much before you hear the album so you don't unbalance the flow of it) but the more I do play it then the more I hear the differences in it's musical genetics from its obvious Goldfrapp musical parents.

The use of strings & orchestration in general is actually quite different than they've done before and the song structure (especially the latter half) is quite unusual for them on one of their own albums. It definitely moves from Goldfrapp parts to Goldfrapp Soundtrack parts and I think that gives it a good progression over it's length from the push that the changes bring it.

I think it's the latter, because immediately after that they cut to Alison/character riding the bike with that big, contented smile on her face, looking like she is thinking about something quite pleasant.

Sad to say, Carpy, but I have to agree with you.  Sitting in front of a PC is not my favorite venue for listening.  Taking a very long walk with ToU will be bliss.

Errr, hope that came out right.  Ummm, not sad to agree with you, just sad that your assessment matched mine.

Very well said, Paolot.  I was trying to think of a good way of saying it but you said it perfectly.  If you look closely, there really is no nudity, unless butt cheeks offends someone.
  • Watching it a third time, I get the odd impression that the Naked Trio represents children, or at least uninhibited innocence? They engage in pillow fights, leave the stairs cluttered like children normally would, play with toy planes--pretty much just frolic all throughout the video. Essentially, I think Alison is playing Drew, who is taking a walk down memory lane with past friends (just with the current image of his past friends).

Not that my interpretation is right LOL. I'd love to see what Alison/Will/Lisa have to say about the video's theme.

  • The song is OK it'll grow on me i have no doubt as all great songs should do (im wary of the "instant classic" on first play syndrome) the video is,well its a bit too arty frankly having watched it a few times but given the fight Alison seemed to have to get the promo for rocket out this is great news its ready well in advance
  • that was lovely. i got a weird little stab of excitement when alison's voice came in! i don't know if i can say much about the song itself that hasn't been said already... now i have to decide whether i want to listen to it again or wait for the album, lol

gorgeous video/film! the bit at the end with alison climbing the cluttered stairs was wonderful, the smirky bike riding was wonderful... alison's outfit/shoes were AMAZING. (so much better than the weird denim jumpsuits from head first)

yes! goldfrapp tickles my synesthesia like no other
  • I have been watching the video all day long and I guess that this video tells the story of an unconventional love affair happened in a past life. I believe that the trio of lovers have passed away in the past and it seems that Alison for some reasons she doesn't know (YET) is just following the steps of their lives, their love affair, their games, their house and their garden. She walks in the places where the trio used to love and Alison seems to be involved in this love affair. She follows the young naked lady that brings Alison in the garden and dances with her, she makes a toy plane fly with the help of one of the men, she discovers the bed where the trio used to love and here we see a "second" Alison standing at the window as the "today Alison" walks in. This makes me think that the Alison standing at the window has been waiting for a long time to be found by the "today Alison" as now she can join again her previous lovers & friends, getting naked and laying in the same bed with the trio. Sorry for my English, quite difficult try to explain this interpretation in a language that it's not my own!!!

No, it's a good question. :) You do need to get hold of an add-on which lets you download videos from Youtube. The one I use is just called 'Download Helper' (google to find it). When installed it should give you a list of the videos it's detected (ie the various resolutions... obviously you'd normally choose to download the highest res one). It's free and works with 99% of clips on YT. I have the Firefox version.

  • Sorry, I'll try to avoid.  Somebody brought it up and, I"m sorry, but I just don't understand why people that are not fans are on here.  What a buzz kill.  What's the point?  Rhetorical question.  NOT looking for an answer.  'Nuff said.  Probably more than enough.

Yeah, that Pilots..  To me, videos should be just as high art as the music and it is seldom that I see any that are worthy of that term.  ToU looks like it's there.  I was always dying to do some with cartoons for videos.  There's a song by Traffic, "Low spark of high heeled boys" that I always envisioned an awesome video for.  Or, this song by Maroon 5.

'' Sometimes I think I've felt everything I'm ever going to feel and from here on out I'm not going to feel anything new, just lesser versions of what I've already felt ''
  • I love how everybody keeps hearing different lyrics. It's so funny how a voice and a song so beautiful can pronounce words so uncannily unhearable. It's like she sings through her nose with a lot of air thrown in. It produces questionably sung lyrics that are supposed to tell stories we do not understand without reading the lyrics. Yet it doesn't butcher the song or the feeling of the essence at all. That is strange yet truly remarkable. She communicates in between the lines, in the melody, the arrangement, the strings, the visuals, the breathing in and out. It is there where I find more depth to the story than the unhearable lyrics.

    Am I still making sense?
On a sidenote: there are better songs than Drew on the album so launching the album with it as a single was kind of a surprise to me. The entire album is gorgeous, but Drew as a first would not have been my choice. It would have been a different song. But that said, to me this is not a 'singles' album. The album as a whole stands very strong as a strangely coherent narrative, lifting pieces from it (which you cannot avoid in the music industry) is almost like cutting a paragraph from a book and presenting it on its own.

I can't wait for the Box. I hope they put Lee and C-Tune on it as bonuses. More Tales please.

My face was like this when I first heard 7T  :-?? but it grew big time on me after their Royal Albert Hall gig, probably as that was the first time I had ever seen them live.
This, however, I know the song will grow on me as for me personally they have never done a bad song. I just have an issue with what I would refer to as nudity in basically what is a "pop" video. It may get tarted up in the name of art but it just puts me off as I find it very distracting and quite honestly pointless (in my opinion). Maybe some people on here will think Im being prudish which I personally dont think I am, its just for me BC era of imagery was far too over-sexualised so I just concentrated on the music and I can see I shall be doing the same with this album.
Do I really now want to travel to Manchester and London to pay a lot of money to a band that I dont just like but love and adore to be confronted of imagery that quite frankly should have died out years ago in some dodgy soft porn film. I know theres no sex in the video before anyone says anything and nowhere near as bad as your average Snoop Dog video but I thought Goldfrapp were more intelligent than this. Seriously dont think I want to fork out for the box set now and might just get the album instead. The gig are starting to look very different in my eyes and I feel quite upset to say I might have to distance myself from this new stuff already.
Maybe Im just in a bad place at the moment so not in the right mood for getting into this right now??

I can sure understand where you are coming from, HB.  It's like I was saying in another thread, I kinda miss the old days when Disney and G-rated movies were the only game in town.  But, really, this doesn't bother me near as much as some things from the past.  At least it's humans in it.  And, it was done with a LOT more class and taste than some of the stuff from the past.  I guess, personally, I can always right off the video and I think the show will be very classy but, of course, that is just a guess.

  • Drew is so keen on switching the moods,it starts with something pleasant and cosy,a bit reminiscent of monster love(like someone already noticed) then those incredible strings and then the atmosphere is getting a tad tense and colder and of course this vocalizing after 3:48 gives me chills.

I'm very, very excited,I can't recall being this aroused about an album release for about 5 years;-D

The little pervert in me also likes small things like "I smell your sweat",so sensual and tender;-P

  • Uh... Bells?

BC is basically sex ran through a WAV file and stuck on a CD. It's all sex songs.

So the imagery fits perfectly. It's like listening to a porn film but not watching it. Which is very distracting on public transport I tells thee.

Still - new stuff. I was wondering why there's so many replies for what I thought was just a single announcement.

  • Yeah I haven't began the process of really deciphering lyrics but others here seem to be doing a grand job I am just really trapped in the music, which is quite simple but effective, really blown away by the vocal melodies and the strings particularly. Really interesting choice as this just isn't hit single material so a brave move commercially, I'll get the 7" single version for sure ;)

At close to midnight after a very long day I got to hear it.....

Gorgeous..... Unexpected but yes, it is, to my mind, a return to Felt Mountain..., very cinematic.

Tomorrow daytime its going on a loop in my house.....

    :)

  • Well, anyways, ballroom is what I was thinking.

Ballroom is superb for the album. Especially in a cinematic setting.
Ps: you cal Waltz to Jo I think.

If you are talking ballroom you may well be able to do a rather fetching Rumba to Drew :)
'' Sometimes I think I've felt everything I'm ever going to feel and from here on out I'm not going to feel anything new, just lesser versions of what I've already felt ''
  • I literally SOBBED the whole way through upon the third viewing. In my opinion, Alison sheds her identity to join the others, and it's completely heart-shattering.
  • @Lollicruz I can relate to that. It was like a rug being pulled out from under me.
'' Sometimes I think I've felt everything I'm ever going to feel and from here on out I'm not going to feel anything new, just lesser versions of what I've already felt ''
  • Wonder it they are REAL strings on Drew (synths are getting very good these days). Certainly sounds good on the headphones.  :-)

I didn't want to really comment until i'd had a full day with it. Funny when Rocket was released it was a very emotional time in my life so, like then, it's hard to be objective. At least this goes with my meloncholy mood.

But, yes it's is proper old school Frapp and I to LOVE IT :). I think the way the board was talking (plus that MIX TAPE 1 choices) it was what everyone wanted. Almost full circle to the Accelerator soundtrack (first thing she did
with Will). Hope the feel is kept throughout the album. I loved
the change of direction on Seventh Tree but some of the album didn't go where I expected/wanted it to go. Didn't feel like a complete album like the others, more a mixture of EP's.

I think HEAD FIRST was a very important album for Frapp as it got the whole glam /disco thing out their (and our) system and made them realise what they are good at and what stands the test of time. It also thinned out the party crowd back down to the hardcore. :-)

As for nudity, if anyone got into Goldfrapp around the Black Cherry/Supernature period you can hardly be shocked by the Drew video! When I met my partner she knew I was a big fan so she bought the first 2 albums. She was quite shocked at how sexualised it was, i really focus on music not lyrics so i hadn't really thought about it. But all through her work there has been sexual references. Field of Penis' on Supernature (infact sure i saw a naughty Lovely Head cover) and naughty drawings in ST book.

Where as I think the Drew video is much more innocent and tasteful, referencing a 'Brideshead Revisted' / french film type extravagance from a past era. I'm actually a lot more comfortable with this than the whole BC/Supernature nipple tassles era.

  • I was thinking about that too. the tassles and the mud wrestling and the artwork for the BC Singles were that bit more obvious direct (nothing wrong with that either) this seems much more seraphic in some way.

I have no problem at all with sexualised references or imagery. Except when it's exploitative. Which BC/Supernature wasn't.

Er...or when it's "tasteful". For me, the Drew video uses too many cliches - the discarded undies on the stairs, the feathery pillow fight -  ugh!  Lazy shortcuts in place of original, emotionally real imagery.

Luckily, I dont really care about the video, and the music is great.

I think the video is referencing films and novels. A homage type thing.

But, I was watching the new Brideshead Revisited film the other month and my partner told me when she was young she used to hang out at a friend's house with servants (and parents rarely there) and they had crazy summers in a huge house/grounds and anything they requested they got brought out to them. Her friend really had no inhibitions, she had her own world with no barriers (turned out she was a bit crazy aswell). In some ways the girl in question never had to grow up like normal kids.
  • Gorgeous stuff!

As with most of you, I've been trying to decipher the lyrics.

I think the first two verses are:

Pull up the blinds, open the door wide, feel the cold arrive, in my bones.

Powder my face, put on your dress tonight, feel like you tonight, on my date(?)

I mean, videos require transition scenes. I'm not sure what else you'd like them to have been doing. A playful food fight, perhaps?

I've no artistic vision to offer the world, lollicruz. I'm just giving an opinion.
  • The thing is Goldfrapp are all about taking existing art and re-packaging it. These days where nothing is new and everything is repackaged it's a thin line between Homage and Cliche! And Goldfrapp often walk that line. Nothing new.

IMO Goldfrapp are only really original, as artists, in their execution rather than their actual creation of music. Their musical references to other artists are pretty obvious if you have any knowledge of music and i'm sure Ali and Will will happily admit that. It is near enough impossible to be original in pop music these days (that is for the avant garde artists to continue and 'pop' music to take the best bits from). The skill of any pop artist is when and how you use those references, how you combine them and the skill, care and execution of the final product.

So with that in mind i think their video's will always reflect this. I mean dancing girls is probably one of the biggest cliches you can get in a pop video! I am glad to see the back of them.

I do agree though, like most pop videos, they may not be to everyone's 'taste'. My favourite artists very rarely make my favourite videos, Goldfrapp being a prime example. They have done way too many 'performance' type videos for my liking. I will always go with a story video no matter how cliche. Any Mylene Farmer fans will understand. :-)

I don't get too excited about videos any more. As long as they reflect and help you understand the song and give you a visual reference point for the artist they have done their job. They can be happily forgotten and lost on youtube in years to come, in my view. It's the music (and your own imagery) that will live on for ever.

  • Just seen the video.....

    Made me feel sad......

  • Tatt Maylor saideth unto us :IMO Goldfrapp are only really original, as artists, in their execution rather than their actual creation of music.

Yes , their execution is much greater than the sum of the parts (and the word I didn`t realise I was looking for)  , Alisons vocal inflection is what makes their music powerful and original to me (personally) .
I also prefer a story driven video , to me it can feel more of a visual journey and more connected to the music through it (if I like it that much) . Some of the imagery can drive little forget-me-nots into my brain - I can walk through a concrete stanchioned car park on my own in a dropped out mindset and an image/music from The Chauffeur snaps to my mind (you either know what I`m talking about or not...um ..umm ahem) .

There was a comment somewhere by Will that he really believed in using real instruments, at least on stage.

  • Aw Bells, there will be no nudes on stage im sure. They can't afford the extras. I knoe what you mean about record labels etc using sex to sell records. Im not over keen on the video.

But thats just onevsong off of a whole album. Id say give the gig a try. Theyre great live even if half of its on tape #:-S but yeah im glad I didnt spend me cash on q boxette thing. Hows your foot doing btw?

  • Its not "sexy" because of the nudity. Im not fussed by that its the medias reaction to the nudity that will be such a cliché.

It would still be better if Chris Cunningham did it.

I didn`t find it particulalry sexy due to the nakedness either , I thought some parts were touching . I would start a thread to guess the tabloid headlines but that would probably get out of hand . "Sexy Al has a bit of Ooh la la with 4 in a bed shocker" only actually funny , with more alliteration and words with less syllables  .

    LOVE tasted CRITICAL
  • To me, the video suggests a longing for an earlier time in one's life that was free, natural, innocent, playful, and sensual (remember the time...by the lake...etc.) She now finds herself alone, haunted by these memories in an empty house (considerably larger than my own!), paint peeling, crumbling walls, surrounded by whispers and echoes of the past (nude, innocent, playful people running through but not really there; phantom memories). Finally she decides to shed (removing clothes to get in bed with her past) the cynicism and joylessness of adulthood (the cold of my bones) and return to a life of wonder. That's just my take. Whatever the intent, the video is pretty and the MUSIC is both haunting and cheerful. Love it. I want more.

And yes, it may be cliche but it's well done. Nostalgia, longing, and loneliness are universal themes and symbolizing them invites cliche. To embrace (what I think is) the message of the song is to let go of the criticism and even the idea of love being cliche. That's a concept intentionally left on the crumbling floor, like the clothes she chooses to shed.

I hope the show tonight is fantastic, and FILMED. :)
  • Not the best of quality, but here -

The radio edit is 3:50 by the way ;)
  • Hmm, these are the best lyrics I could come up with. It's a tough one, although it's nothing new for Goldfrapp :)

    pull up the blinds,
    open the door wide,
    feel the cold arrive,
    in my bones.

    powder my face,
    away I dress tonight,
    feel like you tonight,
    on my date.

    Falling little moon
you burned and crash in dirty snow
    all to ascend
    I might as well
    melt into sunday.

    Remember the time,
we stood there by the lake,
    watching boats and planes,
    three white clouds.

    I swam, I swam,
    I felt the sun begin,
    dreams of your skin,
    on my tongue.

    Falling little moon
you burned and crash in dirty snow
    all to ascend
    I might as well
    melt into Sunday.

    -

    pull up the blinds
    open the door wide
    feel the cold arrive
    in my bones

    You me and the moon
we burned and crash in dirty snow
    all to ascend

Not surprised as in value terms the song is red hot to frapp fans...
  • Hiya.  Longtime Goldfrapp fan.  Saw them at their very first US gig back in the Felt Mountain days - back when Mr. G was an on stage member of the band - and have been hooked ever since.  I was at a work retreat and just got back.  Heard/saw "Drew" for the first time today and, um, well I agree.  It's absolutely spectacular.  Their music has always been cinematic but this is, by far, their best audio-visual experience.  In the past I've heard Alison express disappointment in their videos.  I never got that because I've always enjoyed their videos but after watching "Drew" I get it.  She's probably had rather grand, cinematic images in her head which never quite came to fruition.  Well, she's certainly got an artistic match in Lisa.  Every moment in this piece - every gesture, every glance, every movement of the camera is exquisitely chosen and perfectly matched to this lovely song.  I guess that Supernature money is coming in handy because this cannot have been an inexpensive shoot.

Oh, and, as much as I adore this woman, I do think it's a bit silly to say she hasn't aged.  This is a well produced, beautifully lit video with stylists, makeup artists etc.  Alison is a beautiful woman, but she clearly has aged.  And I'm not saying that to be snarky.  I just think we should acknowledge, embrace and celebrate our strong female cultural figures as they age.  All things end.  Even youth.  Alison has clearly aged, but she has done so with grace and loveliness.
  • ^ yeah unlike the rest of us who have just flipping aged :((
  • Welcome, HorseTearz! Nice first post, especially the point about embracing age in performers. We age together and the changes in both sides of the equation are what make it so meaningful.

  •   Alison has clearly aged, but she has done so with grace and loveliness.

Of course, I agree but, there are shots (yes, it is brilliant filming) that do not show the age at all.  She might as well be twenty-five.  Err, and what Carpy said.  I must agree that trying to hide that we age is insane.

  • I referenced "Monster Love" back at the start of when it was released , what I didn't mention was that I was referring to the acoustic version they played at KCRW, a heart breaking, guitar driven melancholica-fest and it's the acoustic guitar line that's similar to Drew . Only on the acoustic version does the geetar come out of the mix.

So, onwards on my train to somewhere

  • Welcome, HorseTearz! Nice first post, especially the point about embracing age in performers. We age together and the changes in both sides of the equation are what make it so meaningful.

Yes absolutely! It's merely a compliment, to say that a ladies beauty is such that it is unaffected by age. It's much more than skin deep. Personally, i think she's sexier now than she's ever been.

  • I am hypnotized and mesmerized by this video. It's evoked in me a sensual state of mind. It's brought tears to my eyes reviving in me memories long lost that I held sacred for a time.
"To remember is to begin to live again" and this is how she feels at the end of the video when she maliciously smiles. I've been watching the video a lot these past days trying to find a meaning, specially when she enters the room and the other Alison looks at her. Maybe could it be that, she has changed so much from that time when she lived that experience and now is looking back at it from a different perspective?.
I love the tune. It's so pretty. The bass is reminiscent of 80's boleros (Julio Iglesias) and a vibe of Cologne Cerrone Houdini, and the strings once again inspired by Nick Drake.
I am very pleased and currently in such a sensual state of mind.

  • Having given Drew a day of rest as I thought I had overdone it the first day. It really is stunningly beautiful, almost feels like I am listening to it for the first time again. Prob a good job I may not get to see it live until Nov as I would no doubt be a sniveling wreck :) . Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.

Wasn't Tottenham house also used for a lot of films by the way?

In their (objective) and technical defence , radio edits are for radio not for sitting in ones armchair , the frequencies that radios blast out of their speakers isn`t good for say strings , so using the aural bandwidth on strings is wasted , so cutting them out and boosting the other frequencies so the track will stand out and be audible on the shitty sound that comes out of radios . That`s a paraphrased explanation from Computer Music , the poor quality of radio speakers means the sound has to match the shitty speakers to travel into peoples earlugs to be heard and not for audio excellence .

If I were dead, could I do this?
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    "its MY favourite song"
  • On Drew.

Someone on utube described the video as "the art of memory".. totally, yes.. but still, i couldn't help think that, given the video which flashes back and forth, and the arrangements, that there is both past/a remembrance and present/now sense of time happening simultaneously.. compositionally, much of the song is melancholic/in a memory but it's at the parts when alison sings "in my bones" that the notes become happy and light, as if to suggest a newness, (re)discovering... the video dramatises this with alison descending the staircase in the beginning, to ascend it and join the lovers at the end... when then there seems to be two alison's.. as if memory and the present coalesce, resulting in that smile in the forest...

and there's the difference between the low contrast (memory/dream state) B&W and the high contrast (the present/the bike ride)..

  • Drew has earwormed me to a very great degree.

Both the stringed "BOM-BOM" and Alison's "Laa de-daa de-daa daaa daaa daaaaaaaa" bits have taken hold and are frequeently waving to me from between my ears.

    It's sweet torture.

  • I ws just thinking that, too. I mean with all the rousing brass fanfares...
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • About halfway through, this one gets all Nick Drake, but the beginning could be inspiration for a Goldfrapp tune.

If I were dead, could I do this?
  • They should release Drew on iTunes NOW.

  • Drew should have dropped into iTunes the same day the video appeared.

see video link -> watch video -> like video -> buy tune

From a "promotion to purchase" point of view it seems like the path you'd have thought they'd have enabled otherwise the end step becomes 'rip video soundtrack' or 'find download elsewhere' for those who want it there and then.

Though we may deserve it, it will be worth it.
  • Who is Drew?

Being perfectly honest, I have to say I am absolutely in love with Drew, both song and visuals. Visuals first. I love the use of monochrome throughout, it creates a sense of nostalgia while feeling timeless. It is beautifully artistic and stylishly made, the lighting and execution is exquisite, especially the close ups of Alison and the sweeping aerial shots of the mansion and countryside. Alison seems to be haunted by visions of three naked friends? But the sense of nostalgia here doesn't seem melancholy, instead, the evocative images that Alison sees, seem to trigger certain thoughts that revive a sense of self within her.
This sense self is the rekindled sense of carefree 'naked' abandonment which we see realised in her beautiful mischievous grin at the end. Is Drew a first love? An alter ego? A Ghost? Its all very ambiguous, but I kind of like that. The song: wow.....where to start. It's a beautiful sensual haunting affair, gorgeously arranged. Love the cinematic quality, the strings are gorgeously addictive while Alison seduces with with a soft whisper, developing into soaring haunting almost cries of longing. Utterly utterly beautiful. A definite stand out live track last week in Manchester too. Lots of utterings of 'masterpiece' being used in the same sentence as Tales of Us by critics already. I have a feeling this is one album that is going to get under all our skins, slowly, sensually...until we all give in. I've given in already. Thanks Alison & Will.

As for the nudity, I don't find it lewd or gratuitous or off putting, being naked is natural and nudity in art has existed throughout time. It doesn't bother me at all. I cannot wait for the album and the rest of the accompanying visuals. It's so exciting...even the waiting, the anticipation is part of the story.

Ping, thank you for the bike ID. I spent Saturday registering people for a nonstop London-Edinburgh-London bike ride so bikes are seriously on my mind. It could be an urban myth that there is one guy riding it on a pennyfarthing ...  but no Brownies. Or Alisons, sadly.

Here are my changes based on the live close-up video of Alison mouthing it......  As for the ending verses.....well it's really hard to make out....  what's worse she sings them differently live than on the album version.

We stood there by the lake
    Watching boats and planes
    Grey white clouds

    I smelled the sweat
    I felt the sun begin
    Trees on your skin
    On my tongue

    Falling little more
You burned and crashed in dirty snow
Up to a sin, I might as well
    Melt into Sunday

    Pull up the blinds
    Open the door wide

    You, me and the moon
We burned and crashed in dirty snow

It's 1,000 miles, and within 5 days - I think it's 96 hours riding time allowed though it has been done in about 45  Totally amateur event run every 4 years and about 1,000 riders with easily as many more disappointed.

Though we may deserve it, it will be worth it.
  • one tries to raise the tone in this place.....*sigh*
  • Drew promotion cd on E-Bay up in 8 hours from now. I think i will put a bid in late on. They should not be on sale although having said that even normal cds should not either if you look at the copyright rules. The Satin one is nearly up too. That one is quite rare. I took a long time to get hold of that and the pilot cds.
    JAMIE CARRAGHER= LEGEND
  • Hmmmm....what just happened??!!
    ;))
  • How is it possible that Drew,to this time, has only over 170K views?Don't even get me started about silly things that have views in millions.Since when appreciation for beauty and good taste(ok,disbutable matter but still...) became so niche?

Beautiful song, flowering brilliantly and incredible, gentle video with strong imagery.

I don't intend to sound malcontent but I just don't get it...

Since the beginning of time, I would suppose. Do you remember it ever being different?

In fact, it's only recently started becoming somewhat hip to [pretend to] like things that mimic true beauty and taste.

If I were dead, could I do this?
  • You're right Iuventus,I was frustrated I suppose.Thanks for reality check;-D

But I'm still naive enough to believe that people aren't completely consumed with dirty, oily "sexy"stuff.

The success of something as disgusting, inhuman and unnecessary as 'Human Centipede"(I strongly DO NOT recommend) is damaging that innocence though,haha;-D

  • Does anyone have any idea if Drew will have an official cd/vinyl release? :(

I want something like the Seventh Tree singles collection boxes to make a return!
  • Not official presumably, but kinda interesting

No but she was definitely channeling Gaga that night! (Plus Gaga LOVES her + included her in her 'Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson' book)

    That's Sharon Needles.

    Nice.
I had a king in a tenement castle, lately he's taken to painting the pastel walls brown. He's taken the curtains down. He's swept with the broom of contempt, and the rooms have an empty ring. He's cleaned with the tears of an actor who fears for the laughter's sting...

i've still only watched/listened to drew once... i wanna keep my ears fresh for the whole album. oddly it hasn't been hard, i've not been in the mood for it. summer is for dumb party music. hopefully by the time september comes around i'll be more in the mood for this album :3

That's good to know, yeah should get a lot of plays on there then. La La lavern did say it was gonna be released on 2nd sept that's not far away. I know there was that other article saying there wasn't gonna be much of a push with singles so it'll be interesting to see what happens there anyhow.
  • haha i knew it couldn't just be me and you.

  • I don't think this has been spotted yet (it's a busy board!) but there's a comment about the technical side of the Drew video from Brian Strange on Vimeo in reply to a comment about the style of the video.

    Music Video for Goldfrapp's "Drew"

Arri Alexa/Red Epic Cooke S4 prime lenses

Very early on in preproduction we decided to go for a black and white dreamy and ethereal look. It was achieved with some heavy Schneider Classical soft filters and a bit of deliberate overexposure and soft lighting to give it that white beauty look. We added a bit of milkiness in post to further push the look towards a French 1920's feel

I notice it's a Red Epic - I wonder if it was shot in the full 5K?

Mmmmmmm, Goldfrapp in IMAX-ready resolution! @-)

Maybe, maybe not, they've said they're not doing a proper single push for this album so we might not get a release, and if we do it might be nothing more than a 1 track download.

And Latrice should have been in the top 3, Phi Phi O'Puke shouldn't have made it anywhere near as far as she did. I need to watch the latest season, i completely missed all of it.
  • I'm confused...I've seen that Mute or Alison (cant remember which one it was) said no typical single releases for this album but I've also seen next weeks date in numerous places for Drew's single release. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Oh Latrice, what a shame that Phi Phi and Chad Michaels made it past her. Although for the first time in that shows history I agreed with the winner. Sharon Needles is awesome!

I loved Chad but Phi Phi was just a two-faced nasty bitch.

And I was rooting for Sharon the entire time, she truly deserved to win. (Although my Dad thought otherwise, he was rooting for Chad. But we watched All Stars together and Chad won so he was happy.) ;)

Guys I just have so many emotions right now, talking about Drag Race on the Goldfrapp forum has never made me feel closer with you guys and at home.

  • It's the 2nd and there's no release, so there you go, sigh of relief for me frankly after dropping so much on the deluxe set.

"someone got a bit muddled with the info. 'Drew' isn't out today, it's out on the album, which is released next Monday. Xx"

From the lady herself, no single.

  • There is no release. Just promos. Drew a week earlier would have been smart for iTunes: pre-order now and download Drew in advance, like Gaga did with Applause which is the album pre-order track. Order it: download the track, and the rest when the album comes.

I mean goodness! With TWO videos out and Drew promos out I don't see why they are not doing something remotely like that to push the release. They are missing SO many opportunities and SO much momentum to link material directly to pre-orders/sales the way they've been doing it since it was announced. Drew should have been out the second they released the video and pressed the promos. At the same time they should have launched pre-order now and download Drew, something they could have pushed in the App that followed etc. and then Annabel a week before release? If there is nothing but a dry release next week, Annabel should have been released on the day of release to push the availability of the album at that date.

    Marketing. Is anybody listening?!

Drew not out. Monday it is then.

  • ^ I don't suppose you read Alison's vision for the album and how she wanted the album to be the important thing. Who gives a fuck about marketing? Let them do what they wanna do.
  • Jo_ey, everybody and his left armpit thinks he can do better than the next. Don't waste your breath; rather, let them show us just how smart they are.
If I were dead, could I do this?

I'm with you jo_ey. They're all grown ups who have done this sort of thing before and are capable of making the decisions they want.
  • Same here...People have expectations of what they should do from prior experience (myself included) ...lets just see what happens... it is (hopefully) their choice and I am going to respect that whatever the outcome.

Don't compare Tales of Us to ARTFLOP, please.
  • Oh please let's not just bash Gaga because it's what the cool kids do ok? Strangers point was dead on, I see Miley is doin it with her album too. Instead of releasing a single you give instant access to the single track to people who preorder the album on iTunes. Its a good technique to get more sales and chart higher.
  • I don't see how Stranger was comparing Tales of Us to ARTPOP. He's suggesting a similar sales strategy, not suggesting the music is similar.
  • I think the comment was one of those silly mock-snotty sort of comments, like, "Don't even mention Gaga and Goldfrapp in the same sentence!"

  • Drew initially suffered a bit for me on the album due to being so familiar as the first Tale told as a single.

Now, after a weeks play, it's starting to reassert itself in the context of the others and is even stronger for that.

That latter huge strings & vocal runs half is quite something.

  • How nice to bring up this thread, Iuv. I have stil mmmaaaannnnyyyyyy "old" threads to read on this forum. I'm afraid I never will be able to catch up with you guys...

About Drew, then. The strings still get to me too. For some weeks now, I consider Drew to be the best track on TOU, together with Clay. The sudden ending of Clay leaves me literally breathless.
  • I concur.
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • There is an ABBA track in The Visitors album called with a name that has a similar string arrangement, you know the cellos when Alison's going down the stairs and the phantoms appear.
  • ABBA ?!?!?! Please please please don´t say that, TOU just made me forget Head First...
