You know, alot of complaining has gone on about conversations overwhelming some threads, and I can't disagree. But, once again, something besides a plain vanilla board can allow conversations and still not disrupt. In fact, the way many boards, like this one are setup, it's more the case that the conversation is disrupted and fractured, rather than the thread. One of my favorites is a board that, if you reply to someone, it indents the replies directly beneath the comment, while other comments, not pertaining to the conversation are posted below the conversation. You can collapse the conversation and kinda ignore it, so that it doesn't really disrupt the thread as much. Of course, there's the other oft suggested feature of ignoring a particular person completely. Really, neither bother me so much. I can skip a conversation easily enough, though I like the threaded convos better. And, easy enough to skip over someone if I don't feel like reading them. No one bothers me that much.

It's just perky conversations that are missing, though this thread is doing pretty well!

I wonder sometimes if "invite" is the best way to go on this board. That could be limiting new members? I don't know how someone who comes to the board and doesn't know anyone can apply, really. And, I think a lot of people come to the board without escorts. Real catch-22 with all of the junk spammers. And, really, I can't think of a better solution.

The 2010 `Rocket` thread I mentioned did have a section on it hotly discussing about "personal posting" within threads , which is something I tend to agree with for the "Goldfrapp` topics but the O/T threads are open game...to an extent . Arguably , you can see members leaving the board even then , a board trying to be all things to all men/women just doesn`t work .

Its oft said here about `just ignoring` people - everyone can only take so much despite their protestations of compartmentalizing shit like that and just telling people to `just ignore them` is somewhat ignoring the problem ie losing the `ignore` button is the biggest issue (personally) .

The bit I`ve missed out from my previous posts here (but did mention in a message) is that I`ve seen a few boards go down the shitter this way already over the years, still (barely) alive but missing any humour , vitality or discussion , like Joan Rivers had made a sequel to Tron with an orange kicked up her arse to take up the slack . Just musing there , not soapboxing .

Damn, but it's just refreshing to see such nice insights from you, Sartori (concerning where convos belong). I still think of the one concerning fb and twit whenever I think about those two sites.

You're right, Sartori, people can get very sick of it, but I really won't let it drive me away from this site. I can always deal with a demon identified. My problem, throughout my life, has been not identifying them and accepting, even embracing, them as friends.

Yes , `Vive le Difference !` is apt and appropriate , I believe we all have tolerance levels to various things but each of us has the "my head is going to blow" setting at different levels , based on experience and personal stress levels at the time or in general . I can happily Fast Forward through pages of "I want to lick you" posts but one "I`ve got the sniffles and I bought myself a pencil" and I want to send in my Elite Squad of Assassin Badgers .

I don`t think my posts are particularly insightful (I don`t mean that as a `humblebrag`) , they just describe my thinking of it . And a lot of those posts are purely me `showing off` to be honest , a paragraph of setup , purely to make a punchline at the end or post pics of sexy ladies to titillate my secret ginger cravings haha . I am and always will be Olympic Level Procrastinating Slacker material...even as I type I`m putting off cleaning out my car haha . Thanks for the chat anyway. i think everything you guys have been saying above contribute to the message board not been used as much yeah.

some other thoughts i had...

i mentioned somewhere else, i cant remember which thread now, about the long time this particular release has taken and i wonder if that looses momentum for some people which makes them less interested in interacting, sometimes when everything happens all in quick succession people get swept along on the tide and maybe thats not happened so much with this release. i, personally, quite like that things are going slowly, but i understand that its not for everyone. and there's been very little publicity, i think alison does the amount of that stuff she feels comfortable with and no more (which is fine), but thats the sort of thing that brings new folk in and gives us something to talk about.

also, back in the FM/BC days there really wasn't anywhere to go to get info about the band, with the exception of ignite me's website. to an extent thats also true for SN & 7T, but as other social network sites have cropped up (and taken over the world!) people have more choice of where to go for info and contact with the band and or other fans. i remember a few years ago alison musing on the blog about whether or not the website was still a valuable resource, and again prior to this release the conversation was had about continuing it as well as the message board. i think the band and management probably look around and see that its becoming less popular for a band to keep a website/board like this going with many relying on Facebook, twitter and the such like. these days consumers of music have more choice of where to go whereas even just a decade ago the bands individual site was the main if not only place to go.

anyhow, they're just some thoughts i had.

I don't know, Ping. I'm sure it also applies. But, to me, this board (every board?) is about community. About a group of people who have common interests. In this case, music and Goldfrapp, in partcular. And, there may lie a big part of the problem. Our interests vary way too much, so that a lot of those threads mentioned fall apart because no one except the thread-poster could give a wit about the subject. I can certainly think of a handful of mine that fall into that category. Somehow, even though music runs through most everything here, I'm not sure anyone has a big fondness for Big Band besides me. ;)

Mmm , yeah Lou , one of the things I like about Twitter is that it forces people to be creative to jam in a message in 140 characters , but people get into the habit of posting of posting around that length and of the ilk ? I can understand a Twitter/Facebook `level of interaction` is now desired (ie a sentence) , although the FB posts of "Alison , please play Pontypridd Social Club , its bang tidy" do get a bit tiring to read ad infinitum in a stream on FB , so I don`t read the FB Goldfrapp posts really (and as they appear to be a subset of the Twitter stream) .

Yes Lou , good points , I`d been thinking more about the forum in its own right as opposed to its function , its no longer the hotbed of news - you are quite correct , so now its function is purely like the bar from `Cheers` then .

BTW Thanks for changing the scroll on the word game HJ! Might be popping in more often myself for that.
