Lol. She'd be great as Cruella D'Ville wouldn't she!

Coincidentally I was already using that nickname for Theresa Villiers (Cruella D'Villiers), but now she's stepped down and been replaced by another.
    THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

  • I didn't think Mrs May did too bad in PMQ's today tbh. Got to give her a chance. She's the only sucker, I mean person wanting to take the helm of the sinking ship Great Britain - and God bless us all who sail in it! :-S (:|
  • I do actually have some respect for her too, being a time-served and hard working politician, it's just that she screwed up big time in her role minister for migration and border control, so the irony makes me choke. And it was so apparent she was relishing belittling Corbyn yesterday, I have to agree with Low.
Angela Eagle has made me puke too. I don't believe anyone in the Labour Party has the right to challenge a leader voted in democratically, though I do know that Corbyn is proving a disappointing in his leadership style. To have pulled out now though shows Eagle has just been playing party political games like certain Tories we could mention. All ball-less.
  • And did you see Farage last night describing you and me as " the little people". Hmmm....first I was one of Gove's " blob" ( the teaching profession), and now I'm a little blob. I sound like pond life.

  • I think it still is my favourite.  Well, okay, just about anything by Anne Mccaffrey is my favorite, starting with the Pern series, followed by Crystal Singer series.  I have read them so many times it is really remarkable.  I always go back to those books, especially after being disappointed by some other book.  In a lot of ways, I would call them similar to Heidi in intent.  You know, a couple of years ago I sent Alison a box full of stuff for her birthday.  "Dragon Singer" was one of the books.  Ha!  I doubt she ever read it.

ah, Heidi. My favourite book as a child.

  • Jeremy Corbin is a disappointment. No wonder most of the labour MP's despise him. He is an ineffectual leader and whatever side of the political divide you sit, strong government comes out of a strong and credible opposition. If you had no consequences at your work for loafing about and generally doing a piss poor job ( we all know who you are people) would you not loaf and piss about just a little bit? You don't because there are generally consequences for such behaviour. Well, it's the same in politics. Weak and ineffectual opposition allows government to do what it likes; suck up to their pals (big business Tories; Unions for Labour) and generally drive their own extremist political agendas, instead of following a more moderate course for fear that the opposition may actually bring them to account and force a vote of no confidence. That is what is currently leading to the stealth privatisation of the NHS because Labour is in such a fucking mess, that it poses no threat to the Tories. With the seismic political events of the last 4 weeks, Labour should have had a field day and wiped the floor with a virtually leaderless Conservative party but, instead, they pissed about, Corbyn did bugger all and they decended into civil war. The Tories must have thought all their prayers had been answered.
Pathetic. He's not capable of being PM, everyone but him and the unions know this and the country is the worse for it. Statesmen? Not a fucking chance.
I'll get down of my soapbox now!

  • I concur UT.
  • And this one shows the positive side of immigration, not the negative side that everyone seems to want to push at the moment. Mo Farah is a shining example of someone coming to the UK who was determined to do well, to be a positive addition to our society, and he is not the only one who is like this. I have a lot of time for Mo and he should be an ambassador for race relations as we move forward.
Views by people like Trump, who want to build walls to,protect their little empires built by their greed should be kicked into the dustbin of history where they belong, and his type along with them. 'I will make the USA great again' he spouts, which suggests it is not at the moment. He is wrong. It is not perfect, but, like the UK, it is a beacon for what could be achieved, and why it is the target of so many detractors.

  • Totally agree with you UT. Why are people so fascinated with focusing on negatives all the time?
Unfortunately though, certain news stories circulating recently, particularly those from the likes of France and this week Germany, do nothing to squash the ignorant and irrational fear that people have in regards to immigrants. Every time I see another story about an attack, not only am I saddened to hear it, but I also let out a huge sigh of frustration.
There's not even a break between them anymore to try and get people to see that not all immigrants are out to hurt them. It's just one after the other, pushed down our throats every day. The timing of the ISIS crisis along with Brexit and Trump has been just perfectly horrendous.

  • So, no one sees a link between these attacks and immigration?
  • So, no one sees a link between these attacks and immigration?

Not what was said. If the people behind these attacks came in with the wave of other immigrants then yes, immigration certainly factors into it. In truth, Merkel probably bit off a lot more than she could chew by shepherding in so many refugees at once.
However, what UT and I were pointing out is that not all immigrants (and also Muslims) should be tarred with the same brush. It's the minority causing the problems, like in all of human history.

  • Certainly true and there are certainly some dimwits that wish to color them all with the same brush.  But, screening immigrants for terrorists seems an impossible task to me.  I'm not advocating some silly wall, I'm just saying that there are two sides to this argument, just as there is with just about every argument concerning surface issues.

Actually, you don't really need immigrants to have terrorists, there are plenty that are homegrown.  All it takes is for a person to feel alienated (which surely labeling all Muslims as terrorists doesn't help).  But, it also certainly increases the possibility of having more terrorists.  I just don't see a good way forward.  Shutting them out doesn't help the world, though it may help a country limit terrorism.  And, letting them in raises the risk of terrorist attacks.

    Not pretty either way.
  • A large majority of immigrants enrich our society. Our cuisine alone is testament to that.
With the likes of people like Mo ( and the odd Currie house Chinese restaurant Pizzeria proprietor) comes the underbelly of that deal. The benefits migrant, the drug criminal and the Terrorist. If you accept the former, then the latter is always a possibility. Brits have moved around and lived around the world for a very long time so what's good for the Goose...
Of course, I need not remind anyone in the good old USA that about 99% of you are migrants if you go back far enough, Trump included.

  • As am I, a descendant of the Huguenots, so my dad once told me...or was it Hottentots? Whatever.
While we have the Internet there is no need to even think, like a five year old, that stopping the free physical movement of people is going to stop anything.
  • As Trump well knows. All this talk of building walls is him taking the piss out of the U.S. People. He would love to solve at least some of the unemployment problem in America by getting hordes of minions engaged on the noble task of erecting a wall. Rather like an Egyptian pharaoh....I'm sure he wouldn't bat an eye if the wall collapsed and squashed a few of his own either. As long as they were the homosexual ones or the......
