I've been wondering why 1930s and 1940s films seem much better on DVD than do recent ones. My first thought was that films (like almost everything else) have been growing worse -- and maybe, to some extent, they have. But it's occurred to me that, from the 1950s onwards, films have been in competition with television. I think that, at some point, Hollywood studios decided deliberately to make films that wouldn't look very good on a small screen.
Just seen Enders Game. Very clever effects and Asa Butterfield acts the older actors off the screen. The boys a marvel. Harrison Ford is still good. Ben Kingsley over acts as usual. On the whole an enjoyable film. Really need to go and see Gravity now with all it's excellent reviews.
...was going to avoid my partners choice (Strictly Come Dancing influenced choice I think) as it looked pretty dodgy BUT my interest was drawn by one Romola Garai in the main role ;-)
Suppose she must have had some stage school training to be doing the dancing. Then realised the male role was Diego Luna from Y Tu Mama Tambien! Crazy!
