Quotes & Lyrics To Live By.......
  • There's a lot of wisdom out there in a multitude of styles and flavours. Phrases from literature, a verse from a poem, a well chosen lyric.....
Some of it is annoying, some silly but some stays with you and resonates inside for the years to come.

Here's two from me to get the ball rolling.

    Henry Miller:-

Every day we slaughter our finest impulses. That is why we get a heartache when we read those lines written by the hand of a master and recognize them as our own, as the tender shoots which we stifled because we lacked faith to believe in our own powers, our own criterion of truth and beauty. Every man, when he gets quiet, when he becomes desperately honest with himself, is capable of uttering profound truths. We all derive from the same source. There is no mystery about the origin of things. We are all part of creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians; we have only to open up, only to discover what is already there.

Cop Shoot Cop - "Room 429":-

Don't look to the ocean, restless in its dreaming
Don't look to the heavens; for they will tell you nothing
If living is for learning, then dying is forgetting
Once we have forgotten, then we can go on living

A million fires before your harvest comes. To burn out.
Wear the mask of a heathen. For the moon's lonely eyes.

    Soren Kierkegaard.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ.
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit.
Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
  • For those of you who work in large corporate organisations.
The Romans did not build a great empire by having meetings
The Romans built a great empire by killing all those who opposed them.

  • Oh, I love those Carp! Here's another from Henry Miller-

“Everybody says sex is obscene. The only true obscenity is war.”
― Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer

Here's one I made up..."God did not distort Man, Man distorted God"
    U R I E L
What is done in the dark will always come to light
  • This is driving me crazy, Carps. Please, change to title to read Quotations. Quote(s) is a verb unless you're talking about an estimate for work on your car, home heating system, etc.; quotation is the noun form.
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • Greatest idea for a thread in ages....

  • "Oh fuck , this won`t end well"  (this is a quote for introspective reflection before any circumstance that would be suitable for the use of the quote at the bottom , in a speculative Dr Who time travel fashion)

    "Never eat fish on Tuesdays"

"Never underestimate people`s capacity to be stupid"   (a bastardisation of another quote)

"Bullshit baffles brains" a quote from an old friend of mine circa `88 , it was almost as if he knew the internet was coming

     And my personal favourite -
"What`s the worst that could happen"

"Brought to you straight from the People`s Republic of There`s Something Wrong With You . The Hoi Polloi Capital of the World"
  • " always my soul hungered for less than it had"

    T.E.Lawrence
  • Yes, Whick. Dictionaries are descriptive these days. They also acknowledge the common use of the word irregardless. That doesn't make it any less grating to the ears and eyes. Quote as a noun just sounds so common, especially in a thread that, itself, strives to be erudite.

At work, this might just be my motto.

If I were dead, could I do this?

  • I have often eased the minds of my fellow teacher with the following: "The worst that could happen to us is that we all lose our jobs and find ourselves working as baristas together at a local coffee shop while living a Bohemian lifestyle until we all die of consumption at an early age due to lack of health care."
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • You may not quotation me.
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • Meh !

My mum used to calm any situation with "Well , you could get hit by a bus tomorrow" . Way to go Mum .
