The Forum Soundtracking Your Sunday Afternoon.
  • Imagine if we all had the opportunity to do what Alison did today and host a show on BBC6Music where we could play what we wanted. A dream, for sure. But we can pretend we're going to and draw up our playlists and post them on this thread (if you want to, that is).

So the brief is: pick 28 songs/tracks/pieces of music that constitute your favourites and/or which mean the most to you.

To make your choice less (or is it more?) difficult, there can only be one song per artist and you are not restricted to those that are only 3 or 4 minutes long so to fit in to a two hour timeslot. That can wait until you get the call from 6Music :) You can give reasons for your choices if you like, but this is not essential.

I'm going to have to think about this before posting my choices. Something to divert me during this week's team meeting at work :)

Looking forward to seeing what you all choose. I know we'll have at least one artist in common. I suspect we'll have a few more.

This is the sound of summer – watching sail boats from a beach bar after three mojitos. Chill-out to soul, blue note beats and lazy jazz. The crackle of old vinyl: smokey torch songs and saxophones. Drift away to Radio Vibes, broadcasting to you across the ether.  (the track called Beach House is me!)

    Kula shaker / Hey dude
    Leftfield / Space Shanty
    Martin Solveig / Touch me
    Moby / Ooh yeah

ELO / Here is the news
    Roisin Murphy / Movie Star

  • I think I've probably posted something very similar somewhere on here before but here goes....

Just to make clear my original faux pas, it would be easy to make the same list with just Goldfrapp.  I also have to add, after the fact that I have the same problem with Sade, though I don't feel obligated to add her.  I could make a list of 28 songs of just Sade.  Funny that I left them both out of this list.  Actually, I think my list is 25 songs, now, but I won't add Sade, anyways.

Goldfrapp, Pilots (how embarrassing.  I didn't have a Goldfrapp song, originally...)

  • Fantastic selections. You'd all do a great job programming a show. I suspect you may have had the same problem as me - only 28 tracks. I was able to scribble down well over 100 in a few minutes.
One issue I had was reconciling long term favourites with recent favourites and music that represents various moments throughout my life. So my selection here is a mixture of all of these.

    'Danse Macabre' - Saint Saens
    'Kashmir' - Led Zeppelin
'Pieces of a Man' - Gil Scott Heron
'Next' - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
'Willow's Song' - from The Wicker Man OST
'Knowing Me, Knowing You' - Abba
    'Wuthering Heights' - Kate Bush
    'Europe Endless' - Kraftwerk
'Life During Wartime' - Talking Heads
'If You Go Away' - Scott Walker
'Party Fears Two' - The Associates
'Walking In The Rain' - Grace Jones
    'Kiss' - Prince
'Betty et Zorg' - from Betty Blue OST
'Dream Within A Dream' - Propaganda
'Blacker Than Black' - Goodbye Mr MacKenzie
    'Cups' - Underworld
    'Roads' - Portishead
    'Squares' - The Beta Band
    'Von' - Sigur Ros
'Nothing Brings Me Down' - Emiliana Torrini
    'Trophy' - Bat for Lashes
'Sadness Is A Blessing' - Lykke Li
'The Copper Top' - Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells
    'Hey Now' - London Grammar
    'Virginia Clemm' - Katzenjammer
    'Pilots' - Goldfrapp
    'Fingal's Cave' - Mendelssohn

Much of my parents' record collection didn't do much for me but some of classical pieces did, as you'll see. We played the Mendelssohn piece at the end of my mother's funeral & as she passed away a year ago today, it's uppermost in my mind.
I've just noticed that most of my choices from the past 10/15 years are rather melancholy and that would have been the case if I'd made this list 18 months ago. In case you're worried, there are some very upbeat ones on my long list! Which also includes songs and artists that each and every one of you have on your list. Not surprising, perhaps, but rather heartwarming I think :)
