  • From today’s Instagram:

I’m at the seaside again, taking a walk before heading into the studio.
Loving these beautiful chalk formations into the water.
I’m loving writing music here too. Fun & challenging to be trying out
new things with new folk. Let’s see where it goes….
It’s all part of the life experiment X

2021 release would equal the gap between TOA & SE & the Pandemic has obviously impacted on this. Fingers crossed for 2022.

We can look at it this way
    200* 4
    201* 3
    202* 2
    203* 1

  • I’m getting the feeling we may not get a proper Goldfrapp album for yet another few years. There’s been zero news. Just cryptic posts about working with other people…(taking that to mean NOT Will) and that soundtrack to Chloe that’s about to come out by Alison, Will and Utley. But no talk of Alison and Will working together beyond that.

  • How’ve you all been? Hope everyone’s staying strong, both in respects to the pandemic and the drip feed of whatever in the world Alison is up to!

I’m floored more than anything that they didn’t get to do the Bond theme for No Time to Die. Remember hearing years ago a rumour that they were considered for Casino Royale but the studio wanted something “more butch.” But hey, we got “You Know My Name,” so it’s not all bad. There was a Celine Dion song from her most recent album, “Lovers Never Die” that some had thought was a shoe-in. My opinion of her has changed dramatically since seeing her cash-in - er, “courage” tour, however. She caught a flu and lip-synched the entire time except for her new material which she could hardly hit a note on. To add insult to injury, as one of those fans of hers who would rewatch her performances and remember how specific performances sounded, I was shocked that she used vocals recorded from her opening night when she sounded amazing! And of course, the very next show she reschedules but not ours. A lot of pissed off people in that audience and several hardcore fans noticed all this as well. A few gave up on her halfway and went home, and most people were leaving during “My Heart Will Go On” (this was 100% audio from her Grammys performance not long before then). At first I was confused how she could hit every note in exactly the same way as on opening night but then sound like a completely different person during her talking segments or on certain other songs. It was not a pleasant experience, being a longtime fan of hers. If she had cancelled/scheduled or even sung every song for real while sounding terrible, I’d have been cheering her on. But the approach taken was super shady and disappointing.

Ah, anyway. Sorry. Late and feeling a smidge rambly. I’m also a bit lightheaded from the euphoria over ABBA’s new album/singles, heh.

Right, back to Goldfrapp. I don’t think it’s an album yet. I feel like she’s pulling an Enya and incubating ideas, but we’ll get something by spring 2022. Confident that she just wants us to be aware she isn’t stopping. It’ll either be a single for an EP, a film or TV track, or something out of left field like a covers collection (if I were to have one request, it would be Stevie Nicks unreleased’ “Forest of the Black Roses”).

Calling it now, we won’t see much of album 8 until early 2023, maybe late 2022. They won’t want to distract people from the Felt Mountain 20 tour. I feel like her catching covid might have encouraged her to take an extended breather, and I don’t blame her. Her being creative and seemingly very happy makes me smile given these hard times.

Actually, that goddamn amazing ABBA comeback is the perfect example of patience paying off.

As for album 8’s theme, I’m sticking to my tropical/tribal prediction from years back based on her travels and how they won’t want to mimic Silver Eye. Alternatively, I think it could be very pastoral but with a textured electronic edge. Flowery and birdsongy and fluttery, but a more melancholic version of Seventh Tree with more growl and rumbling bass (no songs about tits lmao). Something along the lines of “Stickerbrush Symphony” from Donkey Kong Country 2 meets Empire of the Sun’s “Two Vines” album (another brilliant band and god I wish they’d get a move on with their Japanese themed album) and perhaps with a touch of the masterstroke Ludvig Forsell score for “Death Stranding.”

  • Hi Slip
All good here. Mrs UT has kidney Stones and is awaiting her turn to go in and have those little buggers zapped, so she’s been one of the clinically shielding during the pandemic. Should be done in 4 weeks time apparently.

I’ve often joked on here with people moaning about the long time between Goldfrapp albums and said “it could be worse, you could be a Portishead fan”. Well, we have a whole new standard now, a high bar set by ABBA!

Take care all. It’s not over just yet.

Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
  • Thanks Cookie, I will pass that onto her. She went in about two weeks ago to have one side done but they discovered she had an infection, so they sent her home with A/B to sort that & will then call her back in. She has a nephroscopy tube still shoved up into her kidney for as long as 6 weeks as that bit takes about an hour to get in & they didn’t want to remove it so that has it’s problems! Like living with a cyborg (or a Borg).

    OMG - I want those!!!
  • Alison appeared on Lauren Laverne's Desert Island Disco yesterday to spin her playlist. Apparently she's been doing a lot of writing and recording and is hoping a few of her projects (plural I will stress) will pop up this year. She seemed very pleased about it!

  • I heard that too. I guess one of these would be the Royksopp recording we’ve become aware of & the rest we can just speculate about.

  • I'm suspecting some solo projects prior to the Goldfrapp album being completed. Will did say not that long ago that they only had 2 things in the can and some other underdeveloped ideas...
  • I’ve had enough of the Royksopp song and haven’t even heard it, all thanks to the absolutely idiotic way they’ve been teasing it. Without ever crediting Alison. They can take their giant yo-yo and stuff it where no one go-goes.

Anyway, I too wonder what else she’s been up to. She’s been extremely active on insta for the past while and mentioned working on music (to me these posts signify the start of an album era production phase). Wonder if she’ll release some solo material under the Goldfrapp moniker without Will’s involvement? Maybe an EP or something small, followed by a full fat (well, still a tragically svelte tracklist) album next year or later.

In the latest Classic Pop Magazine:

Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory are almost ready to unveil the much-anticipated follow-up to 2017's Silver Eye. Speaking exclusively to Classic Pop, Alison revealed: "We are tinkering about at the moment. We're doing it remotely, which is interesting for us and a first. It's alright and much better than I thought it would be. But obviously we'll still do stuff in the flesh, too." Pressed on what type of Goldfrapp record we might expect, Will Gregory teased: "Whenever we decide on a direction we go the opposite way. It's a mixture."
