Now that a few years have passed, I don't think Head First will stick up as well as albums like Felt Mountain or Seventh Tree. Head first is a good album, it's really got some great moments, textures and some memorable hooks. Very colourful fun stuff, but overall an album like this can never be as captivating or interesting as FM/ST. If I'm ever looking for some synth pop or electro/80's-ish music HF is the first place I'd go because it does it so well. It's still good, It's still Goldfrapp, but it hasn't made me truly feel the kind of emotions I feel when listening to some of the other stuff they've done, so I can understand where Alison is coming from. I would never call it a bad album or be the least bit ashamed of it. After all, all it does is prove they can be successful at putting there mind to a particular genre and nailing it, too bad the genre didn't have as much depth as what we know Goldfrapp are capable of.

That being said, I absolutely adore the sounds created in Shiny & Warm, and the real ethereal parts of dreaming, hunt, etc.

I liked Head first and so does my cat. I think it's got some really good moments to be honest, I am convinced Alison's opinion was swayed by negative criticism mainly from fans as the media seemed to quite like it.

I think it just seems like a strong comment by her because we're so used to artists being careful to protect their past releases sales etc. Alison is just honest and, on reflection, realised she though HF was a mis-step of sorts. I think all the more of her for daring to just say it.

I like Head First a lot. It's probably nowhere near as good as say, Felt Mountain, but it's good for what it was trying to be. I respect her for not being afraid to publicly critique her own work though.

I too like headfirst. didnt at first it was definitely a greower. think people appreciate it more than Alison realises. she is too hard on herself!

I adore Head First, still playing it. Rocket, Believer, Alive and Head First, for me, are joyous, infectious pop songs - exactly what the album intended (in parts). I agree with Carpathian about it sounding like 2 EPs though, songs like Hunt, Dreaming and Shiny & Warm strike different notes. But I take the album for what it is: a paean to the 80s sound with the Goldfrapp thread running magically through it :) I love the fact that once an album is released it becomes something different to everyone.

A great point. Always fascinating, especially that the same person and the same album can dance different relationships over time too without a note of the album ever changing.....

I really like HF because it is just in a different vein of music. It's much more lighthearted than their other releases which makes it something special as well. It is not so artistic like their other albums but I can't see anything wrong with diving in the more lightweight music. HF is still a pop record better than most of the stuff you'd compare it with. It definately sounds more 80's than most of the bunch who approached that sound.

I love the album as much as all the others...maybe I'm being a bit cagey by not stating an out and out favourite, but I have always appreciated the fact that each of Goldfrapp's albums suit different moods and occasions...and I think their creative flexibility is what makes them stand so high above the mainstream crowd. I play HF when I need a bit of cheering up, and it does it for me! I don't paint in the same style all the time, so why would I expect my favourite musicians to create the same kind of music all the time? In a nutshell - they can do no wrong xx

Yep, I actually just bought it. I'm not gonna play it or open it thought, it's a just a collector item to me. I paid it £ 14.99 with shipping, I guess it's a fair price. I live in Italy and as far as I know it wasn't released here for Record Store Day and I haven't seen it on ebay in a long time. I'm actually a child of the cassettes years (I'm 30) so it's a great memories item to me, and Head First was the perfect album for it since it's basically an album from the 80s.

Quite a cute idea releasing Headfirst on cassette, yes it was a very 80's thing, though at the risk of sounding all technogeek, did you know the compact cassette was around in the early 60's even , took a while to catch on, a bit like the CD in that respect.

If I got one I would probably not be able to resist opening it, I am a bit silly like that.
