  • The best idea would be to stay in the EU, keeping in mind that Britain's membership is on special terms. And IF after breakup British govt. will be wanting to trade with the EU - they've to abide every single EU law to the letter - without any possibility to patricipate in it's creation (if they're dreaming about the "Swiss" or "Norwegian" way - its just kind of EU membership with all the comittments and very limited rights).

  • You must look at the money. I've been saying for years the Deutsche Bank debt crisis is a major cause. What's the name of the number that comes after trillion?..yeah, that kind of debt. Money used like Monopoly game, trillions being thrown on speculation and futures. Someday those investors will ask the bankers where their money is- do they know? Not likely...and so the game continues. If any country in the EU needs to be bailed out from crushing debt, they'll have to borrow from the richer. Now the ultra-rich Brit politicians are faced with sharing the wealth if they're to be in the EU. Pounds will pounds will be pounds. The game of Monopoly continues. Just my two cents worth. I've felt this for a while now.

  • Yes, the banks and financial industries could not possibly withstand any serious attempt to turn their notional capital into real things. Reading Picketty's 'Capital' was hard work in places, but one thing that was very clear was that all these organisations and their 'financial instruments' - derivatives, futures trading and so on - are entirely bogus. They are nothing more than convoluted ways of generating abstract, illusory wealth; a conspiracy by the wealthy classes to increase and maintain their power. The Tory fiction that national (and international) economies operate like household budgets ('you can't spend more than you earn') is a blatant lie, but because the truth is too complicated - and too disturbing - it's proved very useful.

Any challenge is backed up by threats and actions that destroy the livelihoods of the non-ruling classes. The books by Varoufakis - the former economics minister for Syriza - show just how cynical and brutal the European bank was when Greece under Syriza dared to suggest that it's debt might be remediated. (all his stuff makes for excellent if depressing reading, btw).
  • So true whispered, so true. I recently read someone comparing the EU banking system to a great big Ponzi scheme! If you know anything about Trump and Deutsche Bank, you could see why.

  • Somebody explain to me why that blond mop-headed moron still retains his job. Explain.
  • It's the Patriarchy, like usual. Just like the Catholic Church, a bunch of morally and spiritually corrupt old men in power covering for each other's crimes. A tale as old as time, but their time is coming.

  • So the United Nations IPCC report is issued, and announces that we have an urgent global emergency on our hands. If we don't take drastic action, millions of people - especially the poorest ones - will be killed, made homeless, and starve as a result of climate collapse.

The response of the Tory Government - to give the go ahead for commercial fracking. Oh yes, and the new Minister for Climate Change says she won't be advocating that people eat less meat (one of the recommendations of the report) because that would be "too much like a nanny state".

Funny how when the banks were in danger of collapsing, the governments of the world poured trillions into of public money into them.

    Money>>>the planet

  • Well, big two weeks coming up and, quelle surprise, the Tories, and Thersea May in particular, are still scum.
Tories are always self interested, rich/fat cat supporting corrupt lying weasels who would rob Granny if it got their nose in front (which having paid more attention to American politics since the rise of you know who, seems to identify most closely with the Republicans but particularly the GOP - I'm sure someone will put me straight if that is wrong), but this bunch of twats seem to have taken it to a whole new level of sadism and narcissistic self interest, I'm not a Socialist by birth (difficult when Daddy was a wine merchant/businessman), or by habit after spending 35 years of working in the socialist conceived and structured but utterly brilliant NHS, but I do consider myself anti-Tory and I for one and hoping this current crop of manipulative turds end up drummed out of office in ignominy as I would like all my European and World Wide friends back and not be sitting here thinking that they all think I am a racist by association with the knuckle dragging tossers in this country that so obviously are. I'm looking straight at you Nigel Farage, you stool encrusted wank stain!
Rant over. Feel a bit better now!

  • The great Nye Bevan, Labour Party Health Minister and chief conceiver of the NHS 70 years ago, had them summed up and said it best all the way back then.

  • I've posted this on Twitter recently. It's not my original conceit but it does put what a lot of people say about *whisper* Brexit in a nutshell. It's been doing good business as they say.

  • Thought this thread should have a bump in the current situation with Boris Johnson becoming British PM.
'They say he's the British Trump' says the orange overlord. 'That's what they want; they really like me over there'!
Er, no, we don't! The only people who like Trump in the UK come from the same racist, extreme right wing background that he does. When Katie Hopkins, well known hatemonger, who claims to support 'Christian values' but is caught on film naked in a field, being arse piped by someone else's husband; the woman who is banned for racism from, of all places, South Africa; when she starts retweeting your tweets, you know you are not among the good guys! When he says 'I could end the Afganistan war in 8 days; I could do that but I don't want to kill 10 million people', you know that the current American President is a despot, no better than Pol Pot or Nicolae Ceaușescu.
Interestingly, Ceaușescu also started along the lines of calling ethnic populations 'Cockroaches' and set about illegalising abortions. He encouraged Romanian woman to have at least 5 children, with significant benefits if the did, and any woman who had 10 children was hailed as a 'Heroine Mother of the State'.
He then moved on to genocide and after many years, following a revolution, arrest and drumhead court marshal, he and his wife were immediatley executed by firing squad.
If you do not see the parallels in the West today, particularly in America, then you ain't paying enough attention!

Johnson is not a British Trump, but he is a duplicitous, vain man, a proven liar who will change opinion at the drop of a hat (so they have these in common at least), and he is desperate to succeed, and that leaves us vulnerable.
Buckle up everyone. We are all in for a bumpy 18 months at least!

  • Indeed. Johnson is probably no worse than the procession of Eton educated twits we've seen at the head of the Tory party these many years. But he is different  in that he's the first to be openly duplicitous, and careless of articulating openly racist and misogynist opinions.
Meanwhile, as he instructs his entire government to drop everything to enact Brexit, the world is burning.
  • A different kind of war is being waged. What annoys me the most is, at our level, the public level, it is one of hearts and minds and a lot if the public are so easily duped by lies and propaganda. Many of them have become emboldened to be seen as openly racist; an opinion that has been given to them by the media; particularly the newspapers who are spouting the creed of Billionaires who don't care a fig about us, particularly the poor, the homeless, or the disabled.

  • I feel it's our public duty; all of us, wherever we are, to speak up for fairness, against corruption and criminality, and to nail this constant barrage of lies and propaganda that is intended to distort people perceptions of what is really going on.
