  • Looky in your inbox UT!
  • Looking forward to a short week so I can spend some quality time at my sisters who I've not seen since Christmas ;;)
  • Strange. I quit my job this week. After twelve years of contentment and enthusiasm followed by one year of utter abject disdain. Academisation.

Ahh, Kat. That's little short of tragic. The creeping privatisation of state education is a national disgrace. It must be hard to remain committed to a system that is heading in exactly the wrong direction.

But I guess its much better to get out than to continue feeling unregarded and undermined. Far better to find a place where your expertise, creativity and
    enthusiasm is appreciated.

Will you go for another paid job, or can you afford to be completely free at last?

Been there, done that, though mine was closer to 25 years.  While the immediate aftermath was angst, etc, etc, etc; it was, in fact, the best move I could have made.  The weird ways in which my brain was bent for a few years, I don't relish happening to anyone but it was all well worth it in the end.  I hope it can turn out as well for you.  If you can skip the angst and mind-bending, even better.

  • Hi Kat,

I've noticed that you work in a school? What subject do you teach? I work in a primary academy. It can be quite intensive.

So was the academisation of your school the sole reason of why you are leaving or are there others. And are you leaving Education for good? I have so much respect for teachers. It is one hell of a commitment spending hours marking books and planning lessons and then trying to control the behaviour of 30 erratic students.
  • You have so much experience Kat and many schools will need your expertise so please don't feel despondent. You just need to find the right school.
  • Aw, these are kind comments thank you. Serenity- SEN for the past 13 years. A whole range of subjects, pretty much everything except Art ( ironically, as that's my degree subject) Science and PE.
I feel heartbroken at leaving, given that I'm a typical loyal Taurus- type...it's taken a lot to push me to this decision after 18 months of unhappiness. But now it's made my head is in a good place and I'm feeling very optimistic, looking forward and keeping my options and ears open. I visited two schools today ( mainstream primaries), one of which I will be applying to.
I wish, Whispered, that I could retire 15 years earlier than planned ( and that's 8 years earlier than the loony govt reckon we should! ), but until that Glitter-Unicorn parks up on our drive and flies me away then I ( hopefully) still gotta be on the payroll. Supply teaching is an option, as is going private as a specialist teacher, as is leaving education altogether. Hey ho.
    But I'm good, I'm happy :)
  • Well done Kat. Peace of mind is far more important than a pay cheque from a job you resent. Unfortunately, principals cost and do not pay the bills so hope you find a suitable billet soon.
As you know, my playground of the NHS is suffering from the same deliberate underfunding, causing stress and resentment among the ranks in what was once, a fantastic place to work. Now brought to its knees by people who have resented it since it inception and being primed to be sold off for a profit to already mega rich tycoons like Richard 'fucking' Branston. They are only interested in the bits they can make more cash out of, while the coal face parts like A & E and the ugly ducklings of mental health and older people's service, along with social care, can go fuck themselves as there is no kudos or profit to be had from them.

It's a sad world at the moment, mainly be driven by people with agendas, so keep your chin up and believe in yourself!

  • Hi Kat i see. So you are a special needs primary teacher? That's amazing!! I too have worked for a short time in a SEN school. It is hard work. It can also be upsetting at times but rewarding too.

Well in the Metro today i read an article that likened the NHS to the catastrophe of the Titanic so yep its going right down the swanny literally. Too many exhausted doctors and nurses and woah betide if anyone f***ks up. Mind you they dont cate as your expected to act like a superhuman robot on your fourth 12hour shift and be expected to function perfectly fine.

    Yeah right.
  • It sounds like a good move, Kat.  Best of luck with a new position.  It's really good to get out of an anguishing situation.
  • Ahh Kat, sorry to hear about your job. It's horrible it's come to that but why put up with being treated like dirt etc. It's a shame if you like your job, it's just the place itself by the sounds of it.
I'm sure you will get another job quickly. New job, getting married = stay positive as lots to look forward to L-)
  • @Kat I'm sure a big part of the problem at work too, was dealing with chronic pain radiating down your arm. Chronic pain leads to loss in patience! I understand what you're going through. Change is good though. I've been in positions myself, where I feel unfulfilled. It's hard when you're a naturally creative person to have boundaries set upon you too and not be fully appreciated. I'm sure you can breathe now that a weight has been lifted. Now you can re-access, because it's never too late to pursue a passion. :-*

  • It's nice you have that empathy and understanding HB and PG, but nah, having the pain made no difference whatsoever. I like to think I've always maintained patience with people ( and strewth I've worked with some who have tested it lately!). It takes a lot to tip me over which is why it's taken me months of fighting and resisting before finally chucking in the towel. I have applied for a local job in a lovely mainstream school and am happy to keep my options open for a while, not that there are many options in The Land Of Cabbage!
Need to buy that book about Llama Husbandry off Amazon!
