    This is one of the readings I have requested for my funeral:


    The River

    And the cobbled water

    Of the stream with the trout's indelible

    Shadows that winter

    Has not erased - I walk it

    Again under a clean

    Sky, with the fish, speckled like thrushes,

    Silently singing among the weed's

    Branches


                  I bring the heart,

    Not the mind to the interpretation

    Of their music, letting the stream

    Comb me, feeling it fresh   

    In my veins, revisiting the sources

    That are as near now

    As on the morning I set out from them

    Isn't it? It has a very particular resonance for me - the river in the Black Mountains where we used to walk and picnic when I was little, and where I used to spend hours gazing at the trout hanging in the clear water. I live just a few miles away now, though I haven't been able to visit since I got ill.

    "Spiritual ascendance" is good. Especially the 'dance' bit. I've also specified the music for the wake - BC features!

    I'm starting something new creatively at the moment. Illustrating found poems from vintage texts in ink. My ink projects take me ages so I won't have much finished for a long time. But it's nice to be doing something on the side now I'm back at work.

    If you go to Mrs T' website Kat, and into the gallery and the scripts page, these are similar things to what you describe, where L has taken poems by Virgil and that bloke from Stratford upon Avon and transcribed them using a runic alphabet. She speaks pure Norse!
    Apparantly, rendering them in Scouse is nowhere near as romantic!

    It's Arabic. Shuftie means to look. My Dad was in North Africa during the War (WWII) and he told me the most common phrase heard in a market at that time was ' Shuftie Bint' meaning, come and look at the girl, Bint being an Arabic word for girl.

    It's actually military slang Arabic.
    However, if you clean your Giraffe or Gazelle with a lemon or a lime using an orange loofah, you are doing so in Arabic !
