Just to remind you up to 40 spammers were joining each day , the figures are a bit slewed . Not that it matters unless you`re using the statistics to take over the world or something like that ;)

There aren`t so many commenting here (as noted above) , a lull before the storm perhaps ? each person has certain threads or side interests that make them post , there certainly seems to be a reluctance to post or start new threads , others post and persons sit around waiting to be entertained ?

Here are the statistics (comments and new-users), in chart form - for the past 2 months. The surge in new members is not good, if they are mostly spammers... which the activity list seems to indicate! At least we now have the power to delete users, and not just posts.

  • I don't buy it.  The ones that are totally random letters, sure.  But, anyone on their right mind with the slightest bit of paranoia and any aversion to getting their email address slammed with spam is going to have a bit of an odd address.  At least anyone with imagination will do something besides george123.  And, I would expect that Goldfrappers tend to have a great deal of imagination.  Even though gmail spam tends to go to spam, it annoys me greatly.  I've tried filtering but that doesn't seem to work on spam.  The members that refer people to their a website or blog or something...I'm not sure.  Everybody wants to be known, right?

Besides, 40 a day would be more than there are members...

Thanks for the stats, HJ.  Makes me want to add to the list of fixes....

WW, I don't understand why you are mentioning e-mail addresses? In the activity log, for example, all you see is the user-name and, sometimes ... a link that's labelled... "please visit my site/blog".

You can be 99.99% sure all of those with such links are spambots. As for the user-names, they are not a sure-fire spam-flag, it's true. But basically, I'd agree with Sartori's view.

BTW, myself and Carpy have (so far) only been deleting members who have actually posted spam. But we should maybe be more proactive.

  • post spam. get deleted. seems fair.

until we get sidelined by the uber spam bot.

it could happen kids, it could happen

  • That's actually what I was expecting to hear.  That the ones that join just for the sake of putting their links are spam.  And, you're right, about the email address.  It's just that a spambot seems like it would just use random letters.  I guess that is different from a spammer.

Apologies, Sartori.  If you had added the point about the link, I would have bought it more completely.

If all of that is true (somewhere slilghtly south of 40), then there are very few real members and that is a bit disconcerting to me.  The fact is, I guess, I just really don't want to believe that this board is mostly populated by spammers.

  • How well versed would you say you are in internet, whickwithy? 'cos your posts come across as someone who has no idea how spam and spambots works.
  • I try to avoid posting with too much detail as it always leaves you wide open to being called patronising - as if someone has a mind reading device that can answer at just the right level, a point that was alluded to on another thread.
I have to write technical detailed emails all the time, including parts that the person I'm sending to knows, why? Because he will usually pass the email to someone to do the work and without the detail, we'd be playing email tennis to get the right job done. As in , on a forum - more than one person reads the posts here, each with a different set of understanding and experience , I have to assume a level of understanding at some point.
I've fallen into the old trap and I'll just curtail my posts of this ilk.

  • Let's just say I wasn't thinking clearly.  I was really thinking only in terms of what annoys people considerably on this forum.  That is to say, those spammers that spew out threads and posts in threads, mostly completely incoherent (does that make me a spammer? 8-| ).  And, then there's the spammers that just pollute you email.  I had never thought of the folks that come on to the forum and post there link as such but I guess that's exactly what they are.

I agree with you, Sartori.  It's so much more difficult to commincate in
text than in real person.  Heck, even a phone call loses a lot without
the person being present.  But, I don't think you should curtail on my
account.  And, if ever adressing me, never fear dumbing it down.  It's safest.  ;)

Not sure how to answer you question, Kiyuri.  I've used it for a very, very long time (near it's inception).  I've written code (all hacker stuff), though very, very little in html or any other web-oriented.  I am supremely careful not to attract spam or viruses (I'll be damned if I'm going to pay someone to filter out viruses after the fact that they are all over the web).  But, the few spams that I have, inadvertently (or using a junk email), attracted, all seem to be a set of random characters for the email address.  It's very frustrating because they always use some very inoccuous identity (or, "name", if you like), like "BK Survey" or some such and email systems don't seem to let you filter on the name, only the email address and, actually, I don' think they let you fliter on spam at all.  I'd just as soon that I could eliminate the spammer (as our moderators are allowed to do) so that if, somehow, I were to get an actual email from someone that counted into my spam, it wouldn't be lost in all of the spam.

Well, that was surely too much information.  But, I dug the hole and am just trying to fill it.

Once again, being the eternal optimist, I was just hoping that a great number of folks were coming to this forum because they adored Goldfrapp.  Sigh.  It seems I was wrong.
  • *hug party*

Lots of people adore Goldfrapp, but they dont come on this site for various reasons.  The spammers come here because its a soft target (grrr)
