A comparatively recent example is the shift from Kinema (spelt with a K) to Cinema (pronounced Sinema). Not sure, but I don't think that hard to soft 'c' was a part of the famous consonant shift (see Grimm's Law). It seems to follow the rules of modern Spanish (soft 'c' before i and e); so, I'd suspect that it happened somewhere within the Latinate language family. It might have started with the changes in Vulgar/liturgical Latin, by which the hard 'c' (as well as 'cc') became 'tsh,' and the hard 'c' was thenceforth represented by 'ch.' I'd really have took into the matter to be sure.

I presume his friends, Romans, and countrymen would have called him Marcus (actually Marce in the vocative), or some title of respect, such as Consul; though, I am sure there were many that would have called him Stercus.
