Will Gregory Moog Ensemble - Heat Ray LP
  • Will Gregory of Goldfrapp has announced a new project, the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble who will release their debut album, Heat Ray, on June 14 via Mute. It was inspired by the work of storied Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes and features Gregory and his ensemble of synthesizer experts (including Portishead’s Adrian Utley) along with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. “I wasn’t a great maths student,” Will admits. “So my translation of music alongside those principles isn’t very thorough or very accurate. They’re just an impression of his ideas in sound.”

  • Oh, great stuff! :D Excited for this!
  • It's no wonder the two made such a great pair.
  • I've really enjoyed a lot of Alison's solo tunes, but this track has made me realise how much I miss hearing her vocals over the glorious instrumentals that Will provides.

  • Hi All. Hope everyone is well.
I’ve bought this on CD. It’s good but, to be honest, it’s a bit Curate’s Egg. Some of the track are brilliant & others (extends hand & wobbles it up & down left & right). It needs a 2nd listen to confirm for me.
However, I have bought tickets to see them later in the year at Saffron Walden Hall. I’ve seen the Ensemble once before and music sometimes comes alive when it is played live.
    Anyone else have a copy?

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
  • Yet to listen to this. I think i'll have a listen online, and then if i like it i'll treat myself to the vinyl. I'm off tomorrow so i think i'll have a proper listen then :)
  • Will Gregory was on the Radcliffe & Marconi show on the 14th Sept in the ‘First, Last, Everything’ slot (still available on BBC Sounds - it’s about 1:25:00 into the show). It starts with Ooh La La then into the News at 9:30 then into the Moog Ensemble Parabolis Sleuth then the interview. He picks ‘I want you (she’s so heavy)’ by the Beatles as his first, ‘After Destruction’ by Descartes A Kant (Mexican noise rock band - You listening Caro Maple?) as his last and Mahler’s Symphony No 5 as his everything. Stuart asks him about Goldfrapp & he says “we are both on a long term hiatus after 7 albums, birth doing our own stuff by, you know, never say never, In time, it may happen so I wouldn’t rule it out”, which I found encouraging.
We have tickets to see the Moog Ensemble at Saffron Walden next month so hopefully see some of you there.
We’ve also booked tickets to see KT Tunstall at the Royal Albert Hall next May.

Oh, that is encouraging! I've found as much as their solo projects have been great, they've also been missing something, and it's each other's talents.

    Enjoy the gigs! :)
