I can vaguely recall (I could well be wrong) that Alison said that this once moved her greatly,

    Orff - Camina Burana

    This is beautiful too.

    Tavener - Song of Athene

  • Check out the oboe in this, C.

    That is gorgeous..
I have loved this since I heard it in Fantasia as a child. There is something about how it gets beyond itself with its overblown(ness) at the climax that is just wonderful (although I cannot find the version I have where it REALLY does that at the end)

  • Try a Russian or eastern European symphony orchestra.

  • Well happy with this so far and some great, great choices - thanks for not letting such a potentially niche thread die, folks :)

Are you going to the party?

  • Ralph Vaughan Williams did "The Lark Ascending", Bells!

And also the utterly beautiful Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

I keep bumping into Tallis due to my utter fandom of Arvo Pärt. Now here he is again.

Really going to have to investigate!

  • My sister came into this at her wedding and the organist had been on holiday and ruined it   :(  Maybe it was a sign for the marriage as it turned out!

Gorgeous piece. (when it is played properly)

  • Heavenly voices from afar:
The angelic salutation of the Larks.
How softly you nudge my Soul
    With your rousing exaltation!
    I close my eyes lightly;
    And there pass memories
    Of gentle Evenings
Infused with the breath of Spring.
