  • this topic is on point and NOW for all countries to discuss
  • The people who say white privilege isn't a factor in these deaths are the same kinds of people who believe that there's no reason for gay pride parades in 2015. There's a reason there aren't straight white male pride parades, folks.
Intolerance and ignorance are f*cking everywhere guys.

Not to get too philosophical or anything, but I feel like we've reached a point in human history where there aren't any major/catastrophic world wars or mass genocides (well, not as many as the century of mass murder *cough* 20th century *COUGH*) to keep us from discussing these very personal and important issues.
Instead, in these "peaceful" times of the twittersphere and the selfie stick, we're forced to realise how deep issues like racism, homophobia and said political corruption actually go, and we have to deal with them head on. It's a pretty important time in my opinion.
A dentist kills a lion and it's all over the world inside a day, online petitions, death threats, the lot. Maybe if we're capable of that, we can eventually build on it and work our way up (minus the murder threats obviously). We all see the sh*t the world's been putting up with for years, and we're all completely fed up with it. Let's hope we can actually make some positive progress for once.

  • well done Low
  • Discrimination, in whatever form it comes is wrong.
In Nazi Germany, as Hitler and the Nationalist Socialist Party rose to power in the 1930's, they swept all before them, hounding out trade unionists, Jews, Homosexuals; anyone who did not fit their personal view of what was decent and proper.

A Roman Catholic priest, Pastor Martin Niemöller wrote a famous piece of prose to criticise the German intellectuals of the time, accusing them of cowardice in the face of so much persecution.  It has been re-written many times to fit circumstances, and we can adapt it again here to suit today.

'When they came for the Jews, I said nothing - as I was not a Jew'
'When they came for the Blacks, I said nothing - as I was not a Black'
'When they came for the Gays, I said nothing - as I was not Gay'
'And then they came for me - and there was no-one left to say anything'.

If you look very carefully at the brilliant video to back John Grant's 'Glacier', you can see it written on a banner a protester is carrying. Something worth remembering.

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ.
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit.
Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
  • thanks urban

i guess the most distressing thing to me is we know that white supremacists have been infiltrating U.S. police squads since the beginning but the FBI released a report in 2006 WARNING us about this and it was completely ignored by the Bush Administration and everyone else...shameful

  • #AmeriKKKa land of the free ....meh
  • Land of the brainwashed.

It seems like to depend on whether this current global economic maelstrom that we are encountering will settle out or spiral us back into our most basic, self-serving animal nature, once again, as it has done in the past.

But, whether or not, we are so far from seeing clearly that it staggers the mind.
