Goldfrapp's Genre

  • Hairy Trees-Head First-Train- but that misses their 80's synth pop side. I like the Chimera Pop desription.
  • So there you have it friends Chimera Pop the official genre of Goldfrapp! Results based on proposal by rewak seconded by The Carpathian and TVC15 and my unilateralism. A nice democratic outcome methinks, Cameron would be proud!! :\">
What if the Hokey Cokey is what it's all about?

  • And you sir, have missed a career as a philosopher (assuming you are not, actually, a philosopher).

Hahaha!  Not by trade, just by nature.
  • Black Cherry
  • To even get a glimpse, I would have to choose, "Black Cherry", "Deep Honey", "Slippage", "Strict Machine", "Pilots", "Utopia", "Crystalline Green", "Number 1", "Head First", "A&E", "Monster Love". 'Stranger", and "Thea".  But, I would still have to caution, carefullly, that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The best thing about this review, for me, is it allowed me to kind of scan their career and look at the breath-taking development, maturity and accomplishment that has been theirs.  If I could, I'd vote them best musicians of my lifetime.  Well, I guess I just did. :\">
  • Well said Whickwithy I guess that's exactly where I was coming from when I posed the question.

Following the Brighton gig I tweeted "Great gig thanks, the soundtrack to the last decade or more - scary" retweeted by Angie and favourited by Lisa - which was nice.

    Nice!
  • Hiya; newbie to forum so hellooo. Been fan since Lovelyhead, somewhat obsessed since Seventh Tree. Gotta say Utopia sums up Goldfrapp for me, electro mystical hypnotic pop, makes me want to twirl round & round & round til I fall over.
Ps thanx to Keith for hooking me up to the forum
  • Hi Madge and welcome - only been here a week myself and it's interesting to hook up with fellow Frappers. Been a fan since 2004 following an intro from Urban Tribesman (UT) first gig was support to Duran Duran in Birmingham followed by an exotic gig at the Razzmatazz in Barcelona - the band ran out of prepared songs and did strict machine twice! Oh how things have changed. Good choice of track but, as is proven by this thread, non of us can absolutely identify the definitive track without referring to the complete back catalogue.

PS try not to fall over too much you might get hurt!

  • Back to your original question, @Appy61, I would say Ride a white horse. Because that was the tack that made me fall in love with Goldfrapp, and it is the track which still gives me butterflies in my stomach. Of course, I later discovered many other beautiful GF tracks, but RAWH is still good for a first acquaintance methinks.
  • Nice choice Jeronimooo

  • Just read Goldfrapp described as Folktronica WTF?
What if the Hokey Cokey is what it's all about?
  • I think across the first 5 albums on Wiki, I counted 17 different genre classifications; hence why this question is so difficult to answer. One of them for Head First was 'Italo disco'? Who makes these up?
    My favourite is Electroclash !
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ.
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit.
Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
