I’ve been doing a lot of listening recently as I need a new Hi-Fi amp; my existing 25 year old Cyrus III becoming poorly & making noises in the left hand channel, probably due to condenser breakdown.
I’m testing an Audiolab 6000a & a Quad Vena II which a local Hi-Fi store has kindly lent to me for a week, & I borrowed the neighbours Rega Brio. I discounted the Audiolab as it’s a bit laid back & soft in it’s sound but the Quad & the Rega are both really good amps, with a forward & expansive sound stage & a lot of grunt. The REGA has no digital inputs whereas the Quad has both Bluetooth connectability as well as optical & co-axial input for CD’s so that may swing it.
My favourite vinyl album for this is Joan Armatrading Me, Myself, I and I have a very well preserved original 1980 copy. I also use Never Forever by Kate Bush, Los Endos by Genesis & a recent addition is Anna Calvi’s album Hunter.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ. Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit. Shall lure it back to cancal half a line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
Me, Myself, I is a wonderfully expressive track; full of peaks & troughs in the music to test a Hi-Fi, a powerful drumbeat that comes & goes. Been playing with systems for many years & I’ve yet to find a better track or album for the task.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ. Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit. Shall lure it back to cancal half a line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

The original still send chills down my spine 50 years after it’s release. First saw it performed live in 1976.
