Welcome to the new Goldfrapp forum. Enjoy your new home! X
  • Well, let's do this!
A thread about funeral songs has been in the offing for several years now. A little chat with @PonyGurl on another thread about that time when we sadly check out from what, I hope, will have been a long, prosperous and happy life, has finally brought it to fruition.
I'm not religious. I could be Atheist, I could be Agnostic. Not really interested. I was born into a Christian family, even went to Sunday School for a couple of years but the scientific part of my brain has rationalised that there is no God and, when we die, we return to the stardust from which we were created, eventually for our atoms to be incorporated into some new exciting construct.
I have no problem with people who do have faith. Good on you. We all have a strong musical interest otherwise why are we on this forum. To that end, when the time comes, it deserves some fitting music to mark the occasion. These are mine and have been for some years. Who knows, maybe one day, something new will appear to supplant one of these. The list could be endless, but I have got it down to 5 that I think will reflect the gravitas of the occasion ( Much as I like Spellbound by Siouxie and the Banshees, it doesn't fit!).
    These are mine.
I close my eyes and count to 10 - Dusty Springfield
Love is a losing game - Amy Winehouse
The great gig in the sky - Pink Floyd
    Some People - Goldfrapp
    My Life - Dido
No religion, Some anecdotes, a reading, a Eulogy but mainly the music.
Over to you. Jump in. It's refreshing!

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit.
Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

  • I want a Viking funeral myself, maybe cause I'm half Swede :D. I've always been attracted to bodies of water, water calms and centers me. A driftwood raft, wreaths of elder flowers worn on my head and covering my body, then simply pushed out to sea. An arrow of fire sent to alight the whole damn thing at sunset. A big bonfire with marshmallows to toast, Butterscotch Schnapps and shots of St. Germain passed around. A love poem or three to be read aloud and a Gnostic prayer.

I doubt my family would do it though, lol. They're so conservative.

    Hmm, funeral music.
Since it would be at the beach- maybe just a guitarist/singer, some classic and mellow tunes..

    *Pink Moon- Nick Drake
    *Landslide- Fleetwood Mac
    *Norwegian Wood- Beatles
    *Love Song- The Cure
    *Kiki do you love me?-Drake

  • A Real Conversation (probably not verbatim)

Me: Tell them to throw my body away when I die.
    Sister: I don't think they'd do that.
    Me: Then have "me" cremated.
Sister: Where do you want us to scatter your ashes?
Me: Geezus! I don't care. Just sweep them back into the hearth or something.
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • My Brother in Law was a Gamekeeper. He always said when he died, we should put his body in a bin bag and 'chuck it over a fence'.
When he died a few years ago, we didn't! He was buried in his full game keeping gear, including his hat and his wellies!

Half Swede ay PG? Well Puss o Kram to you on Valentine's Day! I have a Swedish friend who lives in the UK and she refers to me as Lufsen, which I believe is the Swedish name for the male dog character In Lady and the Tramp, as a term of endearment.

  • What @Iuventus. No Death of Seigfreid? No Twilight of the Gods?
Loved it when it was used in John Boorman's Excalibur.

  • What, posting or breathing?
So, why I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten?
Written by Clive Westlake and recorded most famously by Dusty Springfield in 1968. I love Dusty's voice, especially on this song.
I think the vocals are great as its about love:

'It isn't the way that you look
and it isn't the way that you talk
it isn't the things, that you say or do
    Makes me love you so'

It's also about the fear of loss

'Tomorrow will you still be here?
'Tomorrow may come but I fear
That what is happening to me is only a dream'

But mainly it's the irony of the title

'I close my eyes, and count to ten, and when I open them you're still here'
    Except you won't be!

  • It's got to be Lovely 2 C U:

    A wonderful place to be
    The birds are singing
The dreams that are sent to me
    Everyone's waving
    But there's no noises
    The smell of your skin
    The glittering lights of hell
    I'm missing sin

I wanna get out of here
    Inhale your sky
    A beautiful place to be
    So I don't know why
    They're selling us something
    I don't need
    They're selling us something, babe
    You shouldn't believe
  • Hi Pete!
Glad to see you still graze in the fields around here every now and then.
    Are you and Helen OK?

  • Hi Nick, Cheers and hope all is well with you both.
Yes I still look at the forum now and then, remembering wistfully how good it was before people deserted to FB groups, which are not a good substitute!

  • I don't do Facebook. Lisa does.
Pass on my best and we look forward to better times of hopefully new music and gigs post this bloody Brexit nonsense.

  • I left FB back in 2010 because of targeted ads and other privacy issues. Doesn't seem to have really helped though- I'm still receiving targeted ads through gmail, even though I haven't been on social media in years! Good 'ol Google, they're in it deep. I just wish there were other girls on here -

(no offense to you blokes, but use sensitivity with the girls- otherwise they'll just leave)

  • It seems many on here are reluctant to post what they would want their exit music to be.
We were driving on a precipitous mountain road in Gran Canaria and I was contemplating the 1,000 foot drop off the edge and Some People popped up on a random play and when I reassessed the lyrics, it just confirmed how appropriate it was when those left behind are thinking about ‘what you thought you’d lost was just mislaid’ and ‘all the poems written in your skin’.
