All second languages can be difficult and people don't have as much problem learning English these days because of the globalisation of the language by the English speaking media and entertainment. People do have problems with the some of the nuances demonstrated in the Poem. Above all you really need to lighten up!
What if the Hokey Cokey is what it's all about?
  • Actually, about the easiest languages to learn are supposed to be Korean and Italian because they are both phoneitic.  Each Korean character is actually a phonem.  What's difficult?  Depends on what you know.  Chinese is a pain in the ass for a westerner.  Pretty much abstract characters with little or no hint of pronunciation.  And, you need to know about 2,000 different characters, relatively unrelated, to be able to read a newspaper.  It's supposed to take six years for a westerner but I've known people who learned it rather fluently in a couple of years.  I am so jealous of Benelux folks.  They have a real edge over most anyone else in learning a language.  Pretty easy for Japanese to learn Chinese since they use a similar character set.  For Asians, English ranks right up there with pain in the ass.  Has to do with the quirky idioms, I think.  Or is that quirky idiots?  I'm not sure.

A couple of other kind of interesting facts.  You'll never see a western word adopted into the Chinese language.  And, the Japanese will pick up and modify any old word from any old language, if they like it.  They have a saying in Japan.  They are born Shinto (Japanese  religion), marry Christian (they like the ceremony), and die Buddhist.  The Shinto gods are hilarious.  If you go visit one of their temples, you have to bring a pocketful of change to thow in a bucket to wake them up.  Cool gods.

  • You're talking about orthography, not language. So was the cute verse above. I've probably seen about half a dozen of them over the years. They're fun for kids; I used to post one in my language arts classroom.
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • The Appy's and the UT's have had many a discussion (well me banging on probably and them nodding saying 'yes UT) about English and it's flexibility. Like WW says for Japanese, English is a magpie language and will happily pick up any word or phrases it likes from anyone else's language (or just make words up) and pop it in their along with all the other words and no-one gives a monkeys about it. We spend a lot of time in France and they have a real bug up their arse about it and actually tried to stop French being infiltrated by other words; particularly English ones. Of course, the kids paid no attention what so ever and it is funny to read a passage of French text and all of a sudden, up pops a word or two in English. Appy's cousin who lives in France (having been married to a Frenchy) is a language teacher and was once asked to translate an article that was in English into French about the 2nd world war. She came to a part that included the phrase 'parachute bomb', as in a bomb that was dropped with a parachute attached to it, and without using about 20 French words, could not come up with 2 or 3 words to translate this original content. Don't get me started on genderising nouns. If you use the wrong gender with your nouns in French, no-one understands what you are talking about. Le or La? We go for the non committal Luh!
So enjoy English. The nearest we seem to have to a universal babel fish of a language. Mangle it, do not genderise the nouns, rearrange the order of words in a sentence, add whatever foreign words you like or even make some up; no one gives a shit, we all manage to understand! (Well, except Geordie's. What is that all about?)
I once stood in The middle of nowhere in Turkey and witnessed end a Norwegian talking to an Italian. The language of choice? Well English of course.
    Viva la Week-End !

  • That's something that really drives me crazy about language.  To me, French is the most beautiful language in the world and I can sympathize with the French for having their language chosen 2nd International language.  I would guess that, while the French invented spying, their subterfuge was just not up to snuff when the primary language was chosen.  Anyway, back to what drives me crazy about language.  I haven't a clue what English sounds like to someone who doesn't speak the language.  I have a hard time believing it's nearly as beautiful to llsten to as French or Italian, while I doubt it's as machine-gunny as Japanese or German sound to me or as hyper-stressed as Chinese sounds to me.

No. if it was, the picture would be from behind

I feel I should point out the error that the Amy Winehouse lookie/likey in the middle lane has made in that she is gonna get one hell of a wind resistance off that beehive style 'do.

Maybe the back of the beehive hair is aerodynamically shaped, like Chris Hoy's helmet.

Still having difficulties uploading photos and because im driving myself mad with moaning about it (let alone other people!) then if this doesnt work I officially GIVE UP lol! I still cant copy an URL of a photo in my Flickr collection into the Insert Image box, nothing happens. So Im just wondering if the URL in this text box provides a link? If it does, then a piccy of my 2 mutts should appear, if not , .....well (slams door and goes off in a huff)......

  • I took it out cos it linked to my whole photo collection!
    a) It could incriminate me (!!!!)
    b) It could bore anyone senseless
    c) Most likely - knowing me - it could nuke the whole Message Board. I have had that effect on photocopiers and i can set off ASDA alarms just by walking IN the door. Which puzzles the security guards.

  • @KatRobin
Hey Kat. Don't give up. If you got that far, you did everything right except you picked the wrong link on the Flickr page. If you do it as Flickr recommend, and use the 'share' button and copy the link from there, you get a link to your whole photo stream. If you look at the post I did above, with the dog dressed as Yoda, that is the way I have found works. You click on the you want in your photo stream, click the 3 circles icon on the right, from that page click 'Download/view all sizes', then click 'view all sizes', click 'medium' and that brings up a version of your photo. Right click on it and the click' copy picture location'. That is the one you paste into your post and that will just copy in that one picture.
If necessary, we will do this by screen grab pictures.
