I'm thinking of buying a Microsoft Surface RT tablet:

Anyone any thoughts on this?

I'm attracted to it because:

It's currently comparatively cheap (£279, I think).
Unlike many (most?) (all?) other tablets, it has a USB port.
It has a kick stand, and it's possible to attach a wafer thin keyboard (making it possible to turn it into something a bit like a laptop).

I'd take it for a test drive first. Every time I fiddle with one, I can't figure out how to do everything I want to do. Of course, if you are only going to use it for web surfing that's a bit different but I would still check it out.

You need to become Tom Cruise in Minority Report to get the best out of one , I thought I knew a bit about touch screens until my daughter showed me her ninjas skills with the touchscreen laptop we had bought her, but, my point is that things get even easier when you do learn them - ie don't try using it like a PC.
That said, personally I'd prefer a laptop that was a full PC rather than the cut down RT version of Windows 8 - mostly due to me not wanting to compromise on software I want to run. I do have a Motorola Xoom tablet, I use it purely for movies on holiday and use tethering if I want a bigger screen than my mobile for typing or map use.
If you haven't seen the market situation, the sales flopped of this tablet, so it's arguable whether they'll get dumped at mega bargain prices soon or not. It's a nice tablet comes with Word Excel etc as standard (cutting out blah blah discussion about Open Office) , touchscreens are lovely but you're tied to the Microsoft market for software (but realistically after a while you stop putting software onto it) .

I've no idea how I might go about taking it for a test drive first.

My intentions for it involve accessing the Internet -- and Word/Excel files, so I doubt whether I'd wish to load any extra software.

I think that, to get it at a reasonable price, I'd need to buy it directly from Microsoft (online).
