Please release Black Cherry in Surround
  • I've been a great follower and I've been a recording/mixing engineer since 1989.
Saw you guys in BCN in Razzmatazz in 2004. I had no job m but I scraped enough money for a ticket and a 18 hour total bus ride from Madrid to go see you. I was the first one in line and in front of Alison with her horse tail....
I have Supernature on SACD (2 copies, although I prefer the DTS 96/24 mix and visuals)-and all of your CDs and LPs.
I know that BC and FM were mixed in Surround (although FM was an upmix).
Please release these, if only on DTS 96/24, pretty please???(and to add insult yo injury , you are releasing TOU in Surround, WHAT GIVES???Changed your mind?)
You can only profit , especially if you release it as a double set....
    What do you say?

  • I guess if they are reading is more the question razzmatazz04

I think it's a nice idea, the only thing I have with surround is my system isn't exactly top notch, and I have to worry about neighbors when I crank the volume up
    It's a re-creation
    Again I live another life
    My imagination
    Can't cross the borderline
  • You know there are digital download sites specifically for 24/96 releases, and i guess Sandbag is now accommodating that as an option, so they could at least go that route. Wouldn't cost much i'd image, way less than a physical release anyway which i'm betting is what would hold them off doing it. It might only be a stereo mix, but i'd jump on a 24/96 version!
  • The SACD+DVD releases done for all the Depeche Mode albums (11 of them!) are exactly the style I'd want to see for the much, much smaller number of Goldfrapp albums.
A million fires before your harvest comes. To burn out.
Wear the mask of a heathen. For the moon's lonely eyes.
  • I'd love BC in surround sound - I'd pay some serious money for it!
    Formerly known as alex_t.
  • i have that surrounded set bjork released years ago. even though ive listened to the albums in 5.1 a few times, its always wondrous to hear it like that.

id really love to have every Goldfrapp album mixed in 5.1. it would be bliss!
  • I hope they don`t , it`ll have limited appeal and cost the band thousands . Sorry .

  • According to an interview Will did 5.1 mixes of FM and BC were already done ages ago, so it would only cost them in distribution.

Mastering , promotion , cover design , printing costs , cd manufacturing - these costs would be born by the artist . Sorry , my job is to think of the things that are the inconvenient truths . Sure it could be done on the cheap but that rather undermines a quality ethic .

  • Like i said earlier though digital distribution can handle 5.1 or stereo 24/96 recordings now and they have that part setup with Sandbag. If it's already been done (as Will said, he was under the impression it was already released!) then masterings done too. Promotion is just tossing a press release out there which is cheap. It really wouldn't cost them much of anything because the hard parts already done.
  • I take it you`ve never seen the Apprentice then ? If you really think that promotion is just tossing out a press release and they`ll come a flocking to buy it , then ...well carry on believing that .

  • For a re-release of old material, which would be targeted directly at the existing fans if it was a digital only release which is what i'm talking about, yes that's all it would take to reach them. We're not talking about setting up a business and getting the word out from scratch here which is what Apprentice is all about, they've got the audience already and they've got the platforms in place to get the message out (the label, the management, the website, the social networks, etc), like i said hard parts done. I've done a little work in PR, i know what i'm blabbing about :P
  • You sold Big Issue ? ;)

  •  I think your ideas while commendable are slightly romanticised to what you want to be true , for example , mastering is a totally different process to mixing and usually done as a specialist job , it requires money to do if it hasn`t been done , its an assumption that it has been done . Legal costs to set up a contract to sell them - as a digital distribution who gets what % cut out of it , everything and everybody in the line takes money .
I take your point that Sandbag can sell/distribute them and that is setup apart from whatever costs there are to adding more product and setting up contract for what % Sandbag get ,
If you want to promote via the label , the cost is born by the artist (unless its an email shot) , the website has limited reach (but "free" I grant you) , social networks - "free" - if you mean Alison makes a tweet about it or they FB it , it still has a limited appeal , despite 32K followers , how many read their tweets or FB everyday , how many would read that tweet/FB post , how many have surround sound , how many would still want it , how many would be prepared to spend money on it and how many would actually go the final step and click "buy" on what is basically old music they probably already own .

Its not a question of PR , the point I was making about the Apprentice is knowing your market , something that comes up every week .

What`ll stop it happening in reality ? for the amount they could raise from it , its not worth the faffing around .

  •  BUT , I do like the strategy they`re employing at the moment , its worked for several other bands of late - the Limited Edition Boxset , despite selling for £70 , as a small run product , they won`t make spectacular amounts on it but they achieve perception of giving value with their "product" . The Sandbag shop looks professional and well set up with a stock of "shiny things" . It raises the profile of the band , that their product is worth buying , it has "value" , something Guy Hands tried to bring in but failed with EMI . This is the most important hurdle to overcome , to overcome the instant desire of typing "goldfrapp tales mp3 download" into Google to bring back tangible value to product , even if we listen to it digitally .

My Point - this strategy gives them the opportunity to perhaps use the Surround versions as off-the-shelf work to add perceived value to other work .

  • Well for the whole first part, like i said with Will being under the impression this was already released i'd assume the mixing and mastering is done, he wouldn't assume it was released otherwise. The main thing about social media is the press track it too, if a band posts some news on one of their multiple outlets one of them will pick it up (usually Stereogum or PopJustice) and the others follow on, and the words spreads. It's true they'd need to know whether or not the cost of putting it out would make a profit, and that's sort of the point of this thread, showing them there is interest.
