It looks wrong to you because you learned a certain dialect of the English language, in this case one that processes the concept of a word representing a group of people as a plural noun--even though the grammatical history would dictate otherwise. I'm sure it's perfectly normal to feel uncomfortable about such matters. From ancient times people have ridiculed or criticized those who speak differently. Aside from skin color, it's one of the most common platforms for discrimination.
