Black Cherry: Best to Worst

  • The hardest album to rank, along with Tales, for different reasons. This album is too damn consistently good!
    1. Strict Machine - An absolutely epic piece of music. By the time the final chorus rolls around it's just euphoric, triumphant and amazing all at once, some kind of orgasmic rush.
    2. Train - Aural sex. Those synths, that voice... dat chorus... mmmm.
    3. Black Cherry - So tender and beautiful. When she goes up high in this track her voice sounds like it's gonna crack, and it's kinda heartbreaking.
    4. Crystalline Green - The sexiest song here. Feels like the second half of Utopia towards the end, filtered through layer after layer of sex appeal.
    5. Twist - The most overtly sexual song and the most fun. The synth line sounds like it's having sex, and Alisons wails in the bridge are genius.
    6. Tiptoe - James Bond-ish with the strings, and captivating when the two melodies come together.
    7. Slippage - Sounds like actual porn music, only, yanno, good. And somehow, menacing, very, very menacing. Alison's scream is electrifying.
    8. Deep Honey - Repetitive, but hypnotic. Feels like Felt Mountain, with more synth.
    9. Hairy Trees - The album's chill-out moment. Fantastic melody, hugely relaxing.
    10. Forever - The only track I don't love here. Lovely production, but the song itself feels very ordinary.

Black Cherry, along with Seventh Tree and Felt Mountain, is my favourite album from Goldfrapp, hence why I don't have much bad to say about it. :P

    02 Crystalline Green
    03 Tiptoe
    04 Strict Machine
    05 Deep Honey
    06 Train
    07 Twist
    08 Black Cherry
    09 Forever
    10 Slippage

Not a single song I don't love.. placing Forever & Slippage was difficult because I bloody love this album, after the first 4 tracks it took my forever to decide the rest of the list. My favourite Frapp album. My favourite album of all time! Framed vinyl on my wall.

  • I am surprised at what appears to be a lack of huge love for Tiptoe. It is such a wickedly hot song. These "best to worst" lists are fun AND hard to do. With the exception of only a couple songs, I like/love all of Goldfrapp's songs to date. Here goes my ranking for Black Cherry (as of today);

    Tiptoe - 10/10
Twist (so so very sexy) 10/10
    Deep Honey 10/10
    Forever 10/10
    Crystalline Green 10/10
    Black Cherry 10/10
Strict Machine (awesome song but it's a bit over played which is why it's not higher) 10/10
    Train 9/10
    Hairy Trees 9/10
    Slippage 8/10
  • I can never decide between Hairy Trees and CG as my favourite song. However after looking at my iPod play count for Frapp I did the same for Black Cherry.. perhaps a little inaccurate with 'favourite' songs as some of the 'commerical' sounding ones / well known singles made their way onto numerous party playlists over the years but still interesting to see...

    Crystalline Green <3 (138)
    Train (138)
    Strict Machine (134)
    Hairy Trees (123)
    Black Cherry (123)
    Tiptoe (122)
    Twist (106)
    Deep Honey (103)
    Forever (95)
    Slippage (84)
    Gone To Earth (35) <added in 2013>
  • I couldn't chose between them. It would be like choosing between my children ( which I don't have - except imaginary ones, Maxamillian James Frederick, Christian Edward Oliver and Atlanta Ellen Darcy)
However, as I have said before, the segue between Chrystalline Green and Train is just ... fabulous and a perfect transition between the dreamy, soundscape of Felt Mountain and the upbeat powerhouse that is Black Cherry.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ.
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit.
Shall lure it back to cancal half a line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

I know exactly what you mean! It's beautiful. Train really creeps in after CG.

Is it true that in early promos of the album the track numbers of Train and Tiptoe were switched? Not sure how'd that sound after years of being used to CG > Train > BC > Tiptoe but I guess they are both electronic songs that grow in layers
  • Black Cherry is not a case of bad to worse, it is from Fabulous to Outstanding.

  • Let's have a try...

    1. Train (gains a lot on live vids)
    2. SM
    3. Twist
    4.Black Cherry
    5.Tiptoe
    6. Hairy Trees
    7. Deep Honey
    8. Forever
    9. Slippage

Crystalline Green (I've realised that I ommited this song around Forever, but I do like it equally to Train & SM).

  • This exercise is a bit like trying to triage the truffles in a box of Thorntons Continental. Who cares ( scoops them all up at once)...nom nom nom!
  • One day you like one song better,  other day you like another... Unless it's total flop, but Goldfrapp doesn't have much of them.
  • Crystalline Green for me, every time.
