  • Hi all. Urban Tribesman again
Following an idea from my other post, I thought it would be nice to hear the lyrics you have taken to your hearts through your life that you have found inspiring or just makes you go Wow!
For starters, two of my favourites:
The language of love, slips from my lovers tounge, cooler than ice cream then warmer than the sun. Who's That Girl? Eurythmics.
Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight. Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude. That's Entertainment. The Jam.
    Show me your soft underbelly!

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

  • I know little of romance and these narrow tract houses
And I know even less of you
So if you should ever think of me
Maybe as a game you lost
Well I know someone who lost the whole damn world
So no more this talk of they're out to get me
I'll just slide out of Sydney and I can never come back

Hi iuventus. Apologies if this crosses someone elses discussion. Cannot find it with a search of the site. I get new favourite lyrics all the time so hopefully, some may have new ones they want to exorcise.

  • All my fave lyrics are in Frapp songs. Non Frapp i would say Whitney Houston-one moment in time is inspirational. i have put them in this thread rather than dig the previous one up.

  • We people who are darker than blue
Are we gonna hang around this town, and let what others say come true
We're just, good for nothing they all figure, a boyish, grown up, shiftless jigger
Now we can hardly stand for that, or is that really where it's at?

We people, who are darker than blue
This ain;t no time for segregatin' talking 'bout brown and yellow too
Hi yellow girl, can't you tell, you're just the surface of a dark, deep well
If your mind could really see, you'd know your colour, same as me.

Pardon me, brother, as you stand in your glory
I know you won't mind if I tell the whole story

Get yorself together, learn to know your side
Shall we commit our own genocide
Before you check out your mind?
I know we've all got problems, that's why I'm here to say
Keep peace with me, and I with you
Let me love in my own way

Now I know we have great respect
For the Sister, and Mother, it's even better yet
But there's a joker in this street
Loving one brother and killing the other
When the time comes, and we are really free
There'll be no brothers left you see
We people who are darker than blue
Don't let us hang around this town and let what others say come true
We're just, good for nothing they all figure
A boyish, grown up, shiftless jigger
Now we can't really stand for that, or is that really where it's at
Pardon me, brother, while you stand in your glory
I know you won't mind if I tell the whole story
Pardon me, brother, I know we've come a long way
But let us not be so satisfied, for tomorrow can be an even brighter day.

Curtis Mayfield.  We people that are darker than blue. Perhaps the greatest song ever written about discrimination.

  • You need to get out more UT you've clearly got too much time on your hands!
What if the Hokey Cokey is what it's all about?

Look at the time of that post. 12.29am. I stayed up special. Or have I become a vampire? No, went out in the sun today so definatley not one of the undead.

  • Wow!  Haven't heard Curtis Mayfield in ages.

I was reading about him today. Apparently, he had an accident when some stage lighting gear fell on him and he broke his back. It continued to record, but could no longer play the guitar, and he sang while lying on his back.
A very influential and inspirational man. I prefer the Babe Ruth version though to listen to as it is a lot rockier. Worth a listen. Jenny Haan is a force of nature on vocals. Nowhere near the sheer ability of Alison but, my God, she has a set of lungs!

  • We only said goodbye with words
    I died a hundred times
    You go back to her
    And I go back to...

    Amy Winehouse. Back to Black.

  • And that inspires you to do what? Slit your wrists?
If I were dead, could I do this?
  • For you I was a flame, Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came, Love is a losing game
One I wish I never played, Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame, Love is a losing game

Played out by the band, Love is a losing hand
More than I could stand, Love is a losing hand
Self professed... profound, Till the chips were down
...know you're a gambling man, Love is a losing hand

Though I battle blind, Love is a fate resigned
Memories mar my mind, Love is a fate resigned
Over futile odds, And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame, Love is a losing game
Another fine torch song by Amy Winehouse from Back to Black. A lot of her lyrics were inspired by her tempestuous sexual relationship with long time boyfriend and later husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

Yo, WW. Since I posted this, Mrs Appy61 tells me she once met Jenny Haan. She visited her school to give a talk being a vocalist and a dancer. Small world !
